DESCRIPTION:We are proud to present Merikara\, a 2026–2027 Jazz Leaders Fellow honored by the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music for her leadership\, artistry\, and community impact. \n\n\n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite\n\n\nMeriKara SaikaPtah at Mt. Zion AME Millburn\n\n\n\nA sacred voice carrying legacy\, liberation\, and healing traditions. \n\n\n\nMt. Zion AME Millburn proudly presents MeriKara SaikaPtah\, a vocalist\, storyteller\, and cultural practitioner whose work is rooted in spirit\, ancestry\, and the healing power of sound. Her artistry blends Jazz\, Soul\, Spirituals\, and spoken‑word textures\, creating worship‑arts experiences where history\, identity\, and collective restoration meet. \n\n\n\nThis season\, MeriKara has been named a Brooklyn Conservatory of Music Jazz Leadership Fellow for 2026–2027\, an honor supported by the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation and awarded to emerging artists whose work strengthens community\, preserves cultural legacy\, and advances the future of jazz. Her fellowship affirms what Mt. Zion already knows — her voice is purposeful\, grounded\, and deeply committed to the healing work of the people. \n\n\n\nA South Orange native with a growing presence in New Jersey’s arts community\, MeriKara has appeared in productions such as Rooted In Us… A Jazz Corner Juke starring Ms. Celli Pitt and friends. Her performances are marked by intention\, weaving themes of liberation\, cultural memory\, and spiritual awakening. \n\n\n\nWhether on stage\, in community spaces\, or within multidisciplinary collaborations\, MeriKara brings a presence that is both grounding and transformative — perfectly aligned with Mt. Zion’s legacy of faith\, culture\, and sacred‑arts ministry. \n\n\n\nThis Sunday\, her offering becomes part of the long\, living story of Mt. Zion AME Millburn: formed in 1902\, it’s a church committed to honoring the past\, uplifting the present\, and inspiring the future. \n\n\n\nBKCM Jazz Leadership Fellowship (2026–2027)\n\n\n\nThe Brooklyn Conservatory of Music Jazz Leadership Fellowship is a highly selective program that recognizes emerging jazz artists whose work strengthens community\, preserves cultural legacy\, and advances the future of the music. Supported by the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation\, the fellowship selects only two artists each year\, providing them with resources to develop new work\, lead community‑centered projects\, and deepen their artistic practice. \n\n\n\nMeriKara SaikaPtah’s selection as a 2026–2027 Jazz Leadership Fellow affirms her growing impact as a vocalist\, storyteller\, and cultural practitioner — and highlights the spiritual\, ancestral\, and healing‑centered artistry she brings to every space\, including Mt. Zion AME Millburn. \n\n\n\nJesus and Jazz: Where Spirit Meets Sound\n\n\n\nCommunion and Choirs Sunday \n\n\n\nThis Creative Arts Ensemble is the collaborative leadership team shaping the sound\, spirit\, and Mt Zion AME Millburn Sacred Arts Leadership \n\n\n\nPhilip Bigham\, Rev. Eyesha Marable\, our Sunday programs blend praise\, cultural uplift\, and community‑rooted performance\, creating a worship experience that honors tradition while embracing creative expression. \n\n\n\nMinister of Music Philip Bingham — pianist\, arranger\, and Vice President of the Barry Harris Institute of Jazz — provides the musical foundation of our worship arts. His signature blend of gospel\, jazz\, and improvisational excellence shapes the sound of Jesus & Jazz and enriches every service throughout the month. \n\n\n\nGregory Burrus\, producer and curator\, expands the musical reach of Mt. Zion’s arts ministry through statewide festival work\, artist development\, and deep community partnerships. His leadership brings top‑tier talent into our worship environment\, strengthening the cultural and creative heartbeat of the church. \n\n\n\nTogether\, Rev. Marable\, Minister Bingham\, and Burrus anchor the creative direction of Mt. Zion AME Church’s live music worship experiences — Communion & Choirs (1st Sundays)\, Blues & Blessings (2nd Sundays)\, Praise & Poetry (3rd Sundays)\, and Jesus & Jazz (4th Sundays). As a unified ministry team\, they guide the spiritual\, cultural\, and artistic flow of our worship community\, elevating every artist who steps onto the Mt. Zion AME stage.
