SUMMARY:Mt. Zion AME Millburn Presents Jazz Leadership Fellow Merikara SaikaPta
DESCRIPTION:MeriKara SaikaPtah at Mt. Zion AME Millburn\n\n\n\nA sacred voice carrying legacy\, liberation\, and the healing traditions of the church \n\n\n\nThis Sunday’s program at Mt. Zion AME Millburn centers on a voice shaped by resilience\, ancestry\, and spiritual restoration. MeriKara SaikaPtah — vocalist\, storyteller\, and cultural practitioner — brings an artistry rooted in the sacred traditions that have sustained Black communities for generations. \n\n\n\nHer work blends Jazz\, Soul\, Spirituals\, and spoken‑word textures\, creating a worship‑arts experience where history\, identity\, and collective healing meet. In the sanctuary of Mt. Zion\, her presence becomes a grounding force: honoring the elders\, uplifting the community\, and calling us toward unity\, strength\, and forward movement. \n\n\n\nThis season marks a significant milestone in her artistic journey: MeriKara has been named a Brooklyn Conservatory of Music Jazz Leadership Fellow for 2026–2027 — a distinction recognizing emerging artists whose work advances jazz through community engagement\, cultural stewardship\, and creative innovation. Her fellowship underscores what Mt. Zion already knows: her voice is not only beautiful\, but purposeful\, rooted in legacy\, and committed to the healing work of the people. \n\n\n\nA South Orange native with a growing footprint in New Jersey’s arts landscape\, MeriKara has appeared in productions such as Rooted In Us… A Jazz Corner Juke starring Ms. Celli Pitt and friends. Her performances are marked by intention — weaving themes of liberation\, cultural memory\, and spiritual awakening. \n\n\n\nAs both an artist and a vessel for community healing\, MeriKara uses her voice as a tool for empowerment\, connection\, and emotional restoration. Whether on stage\, in community spaces\, or within multidisciplinary collaborations\, she brings a presence that is both grounding and transformative — perfectly aligned with Mt. Zion’s legacy of faith\, culture\, and sacred‑arts ministry. \n\n\n\nThis Sunday\, her offering becomes part of the long\, living story of Mt. Zion AME Millburn: a church committed to honoring the past\, uplifting the present\, and inspiring the future. \n\n\n\nBKCM Jazz Leadership Fellowship (2026–2027)\n\n\n\nThe Brooklyn Conservatory of Music Jazz Leadership Fellowship is a highly selective program that recognizes emerging jazz artists whose work strengthens community\, preserves cultural legacy\, and advances the future of the music. Supported by the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation\, the fellowship selects only two artists each year\, providing them with resources to develop new work\, lead community‑centered projects\, and deepen their artistic practice. \n\n\n\nMeriKara SaikaPtah’s selection as a 2026–2027 Jazz Leadership Fellow affirms her growing impact as a vocalist\, storyteller\, and cultural practitioner — and highlights the spiritual\, ancestral\, and healing‑centered artistry she brings to every space\, including Mt. Zion AME Millburn. \n\n\n\nJesus and Jazz: Where Spirit Meets Sound\n\n\n\nPhil Bingham – Rev. Eyesha Marable – Gregory Burrus\n\n\n\nThe Creative Arts Ensemble is the collaborative leadership team shaping the sound\, spirit\, and creative direction of Mt. Zion AME Church’s live music worship experience — Communion & Choirs on 1st Sundays\, Blues & Blessings on 2nd Sundays\, Praise & Poetry on 3rd Sundays\, and Jesus & Jazz on 4th Sundays — all as part of our growing arts ministry. Led by Rev. Eyesha Marable\, Minister of Music Philip Bingham – VP Barry Harris Institute of Jazz\, and Jazz Curator Gregory Burrus Founder Gregory Burrus Productions \, the Ensemble guides the creative heartbeat of our worship community.
