DESCRIPTION:LA-based jazz/hip hop collective Katalyst returns to Clem’s with its frothy brew of hip hop laced jazz with a dash of R&B and Soul. \n\n\n\nABOUT KATALYST \n\n\n\nEvery decade or so a new band comes to the forefront and changes the course of music\, this decade is no exception and sees the rise of one of the most talented\, diverse collectives of musicians\, writers\, composers and producers otherwise known as Katalyst. The brainchild of world-renowned drummer/composer/ producer Greg Paul\, this nine- piece ensemble hailing from Inglewood\, CA showcases an eclectic mix of experimental contemporary jazz. \n\n\n\nThe collective comprises of pianist Brandon Cordoba\, saxophonist David Otis\, Grammy- award winning trombonist Jonah Levine\, keyboard/pianist Brian Hargrove\, percussionist Ahmad Dubose\, uptight bassist Corbin Jones\, bass guitarist Marlon Spears and Katalyst founder and drummer Greg Paul. \n\n\n\nIn 2020 during the height of the pandemic\, Katalyst released their critically acclaimed debut album entitled “Nine Lives” a free-spirited instrumental jazz album that truly encapsulates the pulse of Los Angeles. Conceived during impromptu Sunday Jam Sessions at their home base in Inglewood\, the title is personal as it documents the lives and fusion of these nine renaissance men\, equally yoked through 10 tracks that transport you on musical journey unlike any other. \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, they released their critically acclaimed compilation album with the Jazz Is Dead collective\, in which they toured throughout the US in the Summer of 2022. Brandon has had the pleasure of collaborating with numerous bands and artists\, and is continuously pursuing new and exciting musical territory. \n\n\n\nBrian Hargrove is a Los Angeles based composer/pianist from Dallas\, Texas and an alumnus of USC’s Thornton School of Music and Annenberg School of Communication. An award-winning composer/arranger\, Hargrove’s commissioned and personal work spans a wide range of idioms and contexts – from jazz to pop; chamber/orchestral to art music fusing aesthetics of hip-hop and avant-garde. Collaborations include projects with Michael Jackson\, Vesper Theatre Company\, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Strings and more. As keyboardist\, he was a long-time member of Roy Hargrove’s The RH Factor\, currently tours worldwide with Solange and also performed with Harvey Mason\, Alice Smith\, The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra and many others. \n\n\n\nDavid Otis from Downey\, California\, is one of the upcoming Saxophonists of today. A graduate from Cal state Northridge with a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies\, David also has a Masters degree from the prestigious Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz from UCLA. Through the Institute\, David has preformed\, toured\, and studied with Herbie Hancock\, Wayne Shorter\, Jimmy Heath\, Stefon Harris\, Dee Bridgewater\, and more. \n\n\n\nOutside of the institute\, David has preformed with recording artists such as Usher\, Mac Miller\, SiR\, Theo Crocker\, Anderson Paak\, Shafiq Husayn\, Kendrick Lamar and many more. David can be heard on recordings for artists such as RZA\, Maxo\, and Shafiq Husayn\, to name a few. He has also been on a number of TV shows such as Americas Got Talent. \n\n\n\nCorbin Jones is a California-born\, Colorado-rasied arranger and multi-instrumentalist and has credits with such artists as Beyoncé\, Jay-Z\, Lizzo\, Lucky Daye\, Lupe Fiasco\, Gwen Stefani\, and Kendrick Lamar. He’s performed at Walt Disney Concert Hall\, Newport Jazz Festival\, Monterey Jazz Festival\, the Appel Room at Jazz @ Lincoln Center\, and on NPR’s Tiny Desk. A graduate of USC Thornton Jazz Studies program\, Jones’ love of groove has led him to the a career on not only double bass\, but bass guitar\, synth bass\, sousaphone\, baritone saxophone\, and leading his own group The Corbin Jones Big Band (featuring other members of Katalyst). \n\n\n\nJonah Levine is a Grammy-award winning musician\, composer\, and bandleader based in Los Angeles\, California. He released his debut record Attention Deficit under the Jonah Levine Collective moniker in March 2017 on the Alpha Pup Records jazz imprint World Galaxy Records. Attention Deficit garnished wide acclaim and attention from press as diverse as Bandcamp Daily to Forbes. LA Weekly featured it as an honorable mention in its lists of “Best Albums of 2017” and was also showcased on Noisey’s radio station with Apple Beats 1 and Gilles Peterson’s BBC Radio 6 program. \n\n\n\nLevine is the type of dedicated musician and composer that maintains a busy schedule through all cycles of the year. His most recent recording credits include Jay-Z’s 4:44 and the Damian Marley featured track “Bam\,” and Mon Laferte’s “Norma” which won beat alternative album of the year at the Latin Grammys. He served as musical director for Josef Leimberg and his debut concert on the World Galaxy imprint\, has performed with Stevie Wonder\, Kanye West\, Chance the Rapper\, and also writes\, records\, and produces regularly. \n\n\n\nAhmad DuBose-Dawson is a professional percussionist \, producer\, & recording artist from the Central Coast of California. His music style is a kaleidoscopic expression of Traditional African\, Afro Cuban\, World Music\, Hip Hop and Jazz all. He currently resides in Los Angeles where he is heavily involved in the recording as we as the live performance scene playing for multiple talents platform around the city and for multiple LA Based Bands including The Katalyst Collective. His versatility\, charisma\, and passionate approach to all musical scenarios led him to master a myriad of sound and rhythms that make him a reference among artists\, composers and producers in various genres of music. \n\n\n\nGreg Paul is a Buffalo raised drummer\, composer and band leader based in Los Angeles\, CA. He is a graduate of the USC Jazz studies Masters program and currently tours the world with artist like Kamaal Williams (Henry Wu)\, China Moses and Mark de Clive-Lowe. Greg is also heavily involved in L.A’s recording community\, playing on records for Gary Bartz\, Roy Ayers\, Joao Donato\, Chronixx\, Protoje etc..Along with a busy live performance and recording schedule\, Greg’s primary focus is the Katalyst\, a band of talented musicians\, composers\, producers and creatives that he established in 2014. Although the group is still in it’s early stages\, the band has had many accomplishments on and off the bandstand and Greg plans on pursuing the full potential of the Katalyst for the duration of his career. \n\n\n\nMarlon Spears has been a professional bassist since 2006 and has played for a variety of artists across various genres ranging from SiR to Lonnie Liston Smith. Marlon has performed at some of the country’s great stages and events\, including SXSW\, Coachella\, The Walt Disney Concert Hall\, N.Y.E.L.A.\, and the Staples Center. as well as abroad\, on tour with Kamaal Williams. In addition to live performances\, Marlon has also recorded for numerous projects\, albums\, and singles ranging from Pop and Rock to Gospel and Jazz\, including SiR’s album “Chasing Summer”. See you there! \n\n\n\n\n  Laura Dreyer is a saxophonist\, flutist\, composer\, and educator originally from the San Francisco Bay Area who has become a vibrant and influential voice on the New York jazz scene. A dynamic bandleader and versatile woodwind artist\, she has performed with an extraordinary range of musicians\, including Dr. Billy Taylor\, Dom Salvador\, Amaro Freitas\, Helcio Milito\, Portinho\, Bossa PDX\, Walter Bishop Jr.\, Mel Lewis\, Robert Palmer\, Nnenna Freelon\, James McBride\, and The Diva Jazz Orchestra. As a leader and producer\, Dreyer has released five acclaimed albums—Mysterious Encounter\, Free Flying Bird\, Sax in the City\, Vida. Arte. Amor.\, and her latest\, Água e Sol. She is also featured on Dom Salvador’s award‑winning recording The Art of Samba Jazz\, honored with the Prêmio da Música Brasileira for Best Instrumental Recording. A graduate of Berklee College of Music and SUNY Empire State College\, Dreyer studied with Joe Henderson\, Joe Lovano\, Dennis Kaufman\, Lyle Mays\, and Jim McNeely\, mentors who helped shape her distinctive musical voice. Today\, Dreyer continues to tour nationally and internationally as a performer\, composer\, and clinician\, bringing artistic depth\, versatility\, and a global perspective to every stage she graces. \n\n\n\nKate Cosco is a New York City–based jazz pianist and composer whose professional work spans jazz\, pop\, and contemporary styles. She began classical piano studies at age five and went on to earn a degree in piano and audio engineering from Indiana University\, followed by a master’s degree in jazz piano performance from the University of Memphis. An active performer\, Cosco appears regularly in NYC jazz clubs and concert venues and has toured with renowned artists including The Four Tops\, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons\, The Temptations\, Little Anthony and The Imperials\, and Ben E. King. Her acclaimed trio recording Soul Eyes highlights her expressive touch and musical sensitivity. Cosco has been featured multiple times at the International Women in Jazz and Lady Got Chops festivals\, and she recently co‑hosted a jazz workshop at the Barry Harris Institute in Rome\, where she also performed with her trio at Caffè Lettrario. In New York\, she maintains a piano residency at Robert at MAD restaurant and frequently leads ensembles at Cellar Dog\, Smalls\, Mezzrow\, Ornithology\, and other notable jazz rooms. Alongside her performance career\, she serves as an adjunct professor in the jazz department at Montclair State University\, continuing to shape the next generation of musicians.

Born in New York City on September 27\, 1957\, Weldon’s journey began with a spark—ignited at age 14 when his father took him to see Stan Getz at the Village Vanguard. That moment set the course for a life steeped in swing\, soul\, and bebop brilliance. \n\n\n\nA graduate of the Rutgers University Jazz Studies Program\, Weldon launched his professional career in 1981 with the legendary Lionel Hampton Orchestra\, continuing his tenure with Hamp into the new millennium. He then joined Jack McDuff’s Heatin’ System\, cementing his reputation as a go-to tenor for organ-driven grooves. \n\n\n\nWeldon’s résumé reads like a jazz hall of fame: he’s collaborated with Jimmy McGriff\, Joey DeFrancesco\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, George Benson\, Mel Tormé\, Roy Haynes\, and Cedar Walton\, among countless others. In 1990\, he became a charter member and featured soloist in Harry Connick Jr.’s big band\, touring globally and appearing in Connick’s Broadway production Thou Shalt Not and daytime TV show HARRY. \n\n\n\nWith eight albums as a leader—including On the Move\, which charted on JazzWeek—Weldon continues to perform worldwide\, captivating audiences with his warm\, thunderous tone and magnetic stage presence. He has performed for audiences in more than 465 cities in 41 countries on 5 continents. As a member of Lionel Hampton’s Orchestra from 1983 to 1987 he toured the Americas and Europe. He again toured with Hamp in 1988 and 1989. A highlight in Dave’s career was traveling with the Art Blakey Big Band to Japan in 1987 to perform at the Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival. \nDave was an original member of Harry Connick\, Jr.’s Orchestra from its beginnings in 1990 until 2009. He has thrilled audiences touring with Harry in North America\, Europe\, Asia (Japan\, China\, Malaysia\, Singapore\, the Philippines and South Korea) and Australia. His baritone sax can be heard on each of these Harry Connick\, Jr.\, Columbia recordings: Oh My NOLA\, Chanson du Vieux Carré\, Only You\, When My Heart Finds Christmas\, Come By Me\, Blue Light Red Light\, Songs I Heard\, Thou Shalt Not\, What A Night and others. \nAs a freelance artist Dave was a touring member of the T.S. Monk on Monk Ensemble from 1999 to 2000 touring the U.S. and Europe\, as well as touring Europe with the Tom Harrell Octet in 2000. Dave has also done freelance work with Dizzy Gillespie\, Howard Johnson’s Beartones\, Nicholas Payton’s Louis Armstrong Tribute Big Band\, Joe Lovano’s 52nd Street Themes Nonet\, the groups of Jack McDuff\, Eddie Gladden\, Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra\, Joey DeFrancesco\, Chico O’Farrill’s Afro-Cuban Big Band\, Tom Harrell Big Band\, Lin Halliday and many others. \nAs a leader and composer/arranger\, Dave has recorded 3 CD’s – Every Corner and from Another Life on the Amosaya Music label and Endangered Species on Summit Records. Dave has recorded as a sideman with Lionel Hampton\, Harry Connick\, Jr.\, Tom Harrell\, Scott Whitfield\, Jason Lindner\, Mel Torme\, Ben Wolfe and vocalist Billy Carrion among others. \nSchumacher has received two performance grants from The National Endowment for the Arts. \nAs an educator Dave is currently the Director of Jazz Workshops for the New Jersey Youth Symphony. Dave was the inaugural Director of the New Jersey Youth Symphony Jazz program in 2013. He also maintains an active studio of private students of saxophone\, clarinet\, flute and improvisation at the Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts in New Jersey. And as per the theme\, these cats have movie history also.  \n\n\n\nWednesday May 7 – A  Lifestyle Conversation on Music and Movies with Lifestyle Advocate CC Minton and Movie Producer – Richard Baratta  \n\n\n\nAbout\n\n\n\nRichard Baratta\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRichard Baratta was born into a musically oriented family in Poughkeepsie\, NY in 1950. He began his musical journey at the age 12\, playing saxophone\, flute and drums\, and eventually\, exclusively drums. He played mostly jazz all through his teens. \n\n\n\nAfter earning a BA in History from Wagner College in 1973\, and after studying with Jack DeJohnette\, Bob Moses and Steve Haas he moved to NYC in 1975 to pursue his musical career. From 1975 to 1984 Baratta played gigs and recorded in and out of NYC. Some of his bandmates and associations were with John Stubblefield\, Joe Ford\, Frank Strozier\, Hal Galper\, Mike Richmond\, Saheb Sarbib\, Dennis Irwin\, Vernon Reid\, Billy Bang\, Jack Wilkens\, Ryo Kawasaki\, Jessica Hagedorn and the Gangster Choir\, Guilherme Franco\, Pe De Boi\, Cyro Baptista\, and a very memorable one day hit with Hank Mobley and then Johnny Hartman. \n\n\n\nIn 1984\, Baratta decided to dramatically alter paths\, and pursued a career in movie production. “Money was tight\, the gigs were hard to come by\, and I was getting married and wanted to raise a family. It was just time for a very difficult decision that had to be made. I looked back many times and terribly missed the joy in playing and the camaraderie with the musicians. It was a total about face\, but I have no regrets\, except missing the live performance.” \n\n\n\nSince working on his first film\, Desperately Seeking Susan in 1984\, Baratta has worked on over 50 movies\, first as a Location Manager\, then Unit Production Manager\, and for the past 15 years as a Co-Producer and Executive Producer. He studied classical piano and music theory at Manhattan College of Music. At 15 he was a percussionist for Willie Sossa’s Salsa band. He played electric bass in numerous R&B bands. His jazz chops have consistently improved since he first tickled the ivories nearly 40 years ago and he has acquired a very tasteful style with lush chord voicing and a wonderful improvisational ability as a consequence of studying under his mentor the late Morris Nanton of the famed Morris Nanton Trio. Brandon has worked as a band leader\, music director\, and sideman for numerous renowned artists such as Abbey Lincoln\, Terence Blanchard\, Nneena Freelon\, Betty Carter\, and Wynton Marsalis. He has also served as a U.S. Jazz Ambassador to Africa\, representing the United States in public and private concerts\, master classes\, and workshops. \n\n\n\nLeo Johnson\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeo Johnson is a distinguished saxophonist and a true elder of the Newark jazz tradition. He has had a broad career in both the Latin and jazz worlds for decades. Johnson has played in the bands of notable musicians such as Specks Williams\, Bobby “Blue” Bland\, Bill Doggett\, Jack McDuff\, Jimmy McGriff\, and Chico Mendoza2. He also served as the musical director for Little Jimmy Scott’s band and toured with organist Rhoda Scott. In addition to his performance career\, Leo Johnson has been a mentor to many young musicians\, including Cassandra Wilson\, Winard and Phillip Harper\, Terence Blanchard\, Victor Jones\, Andy McCloud\, Dave Eubanks\, Alan Watson\, and Regina Belle. He holds a BA in music performance and a master’s in jazz history from Rutgers-Newark. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSir G. Earl Grice \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSir G. Earl Grice is a versatile and accomplished drummer and actor based in New York City. He began playing drums at the age of three and has performed with many gospel choirs and groups in the New York area for over 30 years. Grice has shared the stage with numerous renowned artists across various genres\, including jazz\, gospel\, funk\, rock\, R&B\, Latin\, reggae\, pop\, and marching bands. Some of the notable artists he has performed with include Sonny Rollins\, Clark Terry\, Stevie Wonder\, George Benson\, and Gary Bartz. Grice has also been featured in over 50 movies and television shows as an actor. Scheduled for February 7-8\, 2025\, the festival will take place at the Bradley Beach Elementary School Theatre from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM Friday and 6:000 PM to 10:00 PM on Saturday evening.
