See you there! \nAbout Chris Powe \nLos Angeles native\, Chris Powe\, is an exciting new voice on the alto saxophone. His passion for music began at an early age. He honed his skills in high school\, took private lessons under the tutelage of esteemed multi-instrumentalist Scott Mayo\, and attended the Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center (FPCAC)\, which is in the heart of Los Angeles’ Black creative community\, Leimert Park. \nPowe earned his bachelor’s degree in Music Business/Management from Berklee College of Music. He studied under esteemed professors such as Tia Fuller and Gregory Groover. While in college\, he played multiple shows in Boston\, New York City\, and the greater New England region. \nPowe has returned home to Los Angeles and has gigged extensively. He has held residencies under his own name and has played at multiple venues across the city. DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a night of soulful jazz vibes with Victor Jones Orchestrio live at Rutgers IJS!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVictor Jones —Rutgers IJS Presents the Victor Jones Orchestrio \nVictor Jones is a legendary American jazz drummer and bandleader\, born in Newark\, New Jersey in 1954\, whose career spans more than five decades across the worlds of jazz\, world music\, fusion\, and orchestral improvisation. \nJoining Victor Jones for this special Rutgers IJS performance are three extraordinary artists: Roberta Piket on piano\, celebrated for her expressive touch and adventurous harmonic sense; Gabriel Baldo on bass\, bringing deep groove and modern jazz fluency; and Janétza Miranda on vocals\, whose dynamic presence and soulful clarity add a powerful dimension to the Orchestrio’s sound. Together\, they create a vibrant\, genre‑crossing ensemble that amplifies Jones’s signature energy and rhythmic brilliance. \n \nAbout Victor Jones \nJones began his musical life on trumpet\, studying the instrument for ten years and performing in the Elmwood Elementary School symphonic orchestra before shifting his focus to drums at age twelve\, inspired by televised performances by Louis Armstrong and later by the Beatles.He continued his formal training at Berklee College of Music\, studying privately with master drummers Elvin Jones\, Freddie Waits\, and Ed Blackwell. \nBy the early 1970s\, Jones was touring the U.S. and Europe with Lou Donaldson\, followed by work with Johnny Mathis. In 1977\, he joined Stan Getz’s band\, touring globally and performing on several of Getz’s recordings\, including Children of the World and White Heat.His career expanded to collaborations with major artists including James Moody\, Michel Petrucciani\, Stanley Clarke\, Phyllis Hyman\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Chaka Khan\, and many others. \nJones is widely regarded as a visionary drummer and bandleader\, equally at home in traditional jazz\, modern jazz\, and world‑music hybrids. DESCRIPTION:Come experience the dynamic fusion of Nuyorican salsa and Afro-Cuban jazz with multi-talented musician Pete Rodríguez.\n\n\nTrumpeter\, vocalist and percussionist Pete Rodríguez carries the bloodline of Nuyorican salsa as he takes the tradition of Afro-Cuban jazz to new places. The son of renowned salsero Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez and godson of Fania Records bandleader Johnny Pacheco\, the younger Rodríguez cut his teeth backing up some of the greatest names in Latin music. He became his father’s musical director at the age of 19. \nCoached by pianist Oscar Hernandez\, the former director for “El Conde” and Ruben Blades\, Rodríguez was playing trumpet\, singing coro\, playing maracas and giving cues to the band. As a vocalist\, he sang on Tito Puente’s Grammy-award winning Mambo Birdland. As an instrumentalist\, he’s appeared with legends including Celia Cruz\, Eddie Palmieri\, Chico O’Farrill and Bebo Valdez. Now\, as a bandleader\, Rodríguez is drawing on these experiences to take his brand of Afro-Cuban jazz in exciting new directions. \n \nRodríguez’s music comes from a deeply personal place\, reflecting on his connections to his father and heritage\, as well as other unexpected influences. Rodríguez lived through the birth of Hip Hop during his early childhood in Bronx\, New York. As a sharp contrast\, after moving to Puerto Rico\, he focused on classical music\, performing trumpet with the Symphony of Puerto Rico at the young age of 15. While in the United States Army\, he discovered his love for jazz and made it the focus of his professional and educational pursuits after leaving the military. The diversity of these life experiences can be heard both in Rodríguez’s compositions and playing style. \nWhile pursuing his musical career\, Rodríguez has also always made time for prioritizing education. He holds his bachelor and master of music degrees in jazz from Rutgers University. DESCRIPTION:SHOUT! – Clem's resident big band led by master saxist and composer Lance Bryant return for their monthly roof raising performance\n\n\nSHOUT! features some of the finest musicians in the NY/NJ area in a modern big band setting performing hip arrangements of new jazz classics and originals by master arranger and tenor saxophonist Lance Bryant.  This full sixteen piece big band performs compositions and arrangements by Lance and occasionally arrangements of his colleagues. Lance has been arranging for other artists and bands for over twenty five years\, starting with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. “Lionel Hampton always encouraged me to keep writing\,” Lance says of the iconic Jazz legend. “I found that when commissioned to write for artists or band leaders there was often some level of restrictions or parameters to adhere to.” That was until Lance was commissioned to write a program of arrangements to be performed live by vocalist Carla Cook and the NDR Big Band in Hamburg\, Germany in 2002. Given ample freedom to create by Carla\, Lance wrote nine arrangements for the program. “I was so pleased with the results\, I never forgot that feeling.” In the Spring of 2022 Lance finally decided to start his own band. “For me there’s nothing like that range of power and expression we can achieve with sixteen great musicians. When Lance is not performing his own music he is touring with revered South African pianist\, Abdullah Ibrahim\, performing and recording as saxophonist with fellow New York area players\, teaching and writing commissioned arrangements for other artists and bands. Lance comes out of Markham\, Illinois\, a small town near Chicago. He received his formal music education at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, MA\, where he studied saxophone\, composition and arranging. After moving to New York City in the mid. 1980s\, Lance continued his education\, studying saxophone and arranging privately with Frank Foster\, the former director of the Count Basie Orchestra. He also studied composition with Bruce Adolphe of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society. In 1990 Lance began his decade-long relationship with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and in 1993 became the Orchestra’s Musical Director and Principal Arranger. Lance also made his film debut in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X and traveled extensively with Phyllis Hyman\, Jon Hendricks\, Pete “LaRocca” Sims\, Wallace Roney\, Abdulah Ibrahim\, Bootsy Collins\, James Williams and others. In the early summer of 2000\, Lance was selected as an on-stage musician for the Broadway production of the musical review Swing!\, which received six Toni nominations. Throughout his music career\, Lance’s talents as an arranger\, composer\, saxophonist and vocalist have been featured on many projects like: For the Love of Jazz on Mojazz Records (Lionel Hampton)\, Dem Bones and Simply Natural on MaxJazz Records for Grammy nominated vocalist Carla Cook\, Swingin’ Away for the George Gee Swing Orchestra\, and more recently on drummer Yoron Israel’s latest release\, Visions\, the Music of Stevie Wonder. \nLance’s earliest musical experience was established while growing up in the Baptist Church. His connection with spirituality and music has endured. In 2000 to 2006 Lance served as Director of Instrumental Music at Fountain Baptist Church in Summit\, NJ. Between 2006 and 2013\, while living in Massachusetts\, Lance served as Minister of Music for Andover Baptist Church in Andover MA\, leading worship services with gospel and sometimes jazz music. In 2002 he released Psalm\, the first of four Cds featuring original songs\, and jazz arrangements of hymns and Spirituals. \nAs an educator Lance’s recent teaching work has included woodwind instructor for Covenant Christian Academy in Peabody\, MA\, director of the Phillips Academy Gospel Choir in Andover MA\, and Berklee’s Saxophone Weekend for the Berklee College of Music summer program where Lance taught master classes\, group lessons\, jazz theory\, improvisation and ensemble. Lance also served on the faculty or Jazz At Lincoln Center’s educational department working with it’s outreach program for youth throughout New York City. \nIn 2014-15 Lance performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on the Broadway musical hit After Midnight. Starting in Spring of 2016 he performed in the orchestra of the Broadway production of George C. Wolfe’s “Shuffle Along …” featuring Tony Award winner Audra MacDonald and the choreography of Savion Glover. When he’s not touring with Abdullah Ibrahim and Ekaya\, Lance continues to teach and perform in the New York and northern New Jersey areas as a solo artist and in bands that include Andy Farber and his Orchestra\, and the New Lionel Hampton Big Band featuring Jason Marsalis. \nRealizing the importance of spirituality and the blues as healing and empowering forces\, Lance always makes sure to incorporate these elements from his cultural background into his music. DESCRIPTION:SHOUT! – Clem's resident big band led by master saxist and composer Lance Bryant return for their monthly roof raising performance\n\n\nSHOUT! features some of the finest musicians in the NY/NJ area in a modern big band setting performing hip arrangements of new jazz classics and originals by master arranger and tenor saxophonist Lance Bryant.  This full sixteen piece big band performs compositions and arrangements by Lance and occasionally arrangements of his colleagues. Lance has been arranging for other artists and bands for over twenty five years\, starting with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. “Lionel Hampton always encouraged me to keep writing\,” Lance says of the iconic Jazz legend. “I found that when commissioned to write for artists or band leaders there was often some level of restrictions or parameters to adhere to.” That was until Lance was commissioned to write a program of arrangements to be performed live by vocalist Carla Cook and the NDR Big Band in Hamburg\, Germany in 2002. Given ample freedom to create by Carla\, Lance wrote nine arrangements for the program. “I was so pleased with the results\, I never forgot that feeling.” In the Spring of 2022 Lance finally decided to start his own band. “For me there’s nothing like that range of power and expression we can achieve with sixteen great musicians. When Lance is not performing his own music he is touring with revered South African pianist\, Abdullah Ibrahim\, performing and recording as saxophonist with fellow New York area players\, teaching and writing commissioned arrangements for other artists and bands. Lance comes out of Markham\, Illinois\, a small town near Chicago. He received his formal music education at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, MA\, where he studied saxophone\, composition and arranging. After moving to New York City in the mid. 1980s\, Lance continued his education\, studying saxophone and arranging privately with Frank Foster\, the former director of the Count Basie Orchestra. He also studied composition with Bruce Adolphe of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society. In 1990 Lance began his decade-long relationship with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and in 1993 became the Orchestra’s Musical Director and Principal Arranger. Lance also made his film debut in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X and traveled extensively with Phyllis Hyman\, Jon Hendricks\, Pete “LaRocca” Sims\, Wallace Roney\, Abdulah Ibrahim\, Bootsy Collins\, James Williams and others. In the early summer of 2000\, Lance was selected as an on-stage musician for the Broadway production of the musical review Swing!\, which received six Toni nominations. Throughout his music career\, Lance’s talents as an arranger\, composer\, saxophonist and vocalist have been featured on many projects like: For the Love of Jazz on Mojazz Records (Lionel Hampton)\, Dem Bones and Simply Natural on MaxJazz Records for Grammy nominated vocalist Carla Cook\, Swingin’ Away for the George Gee Swing Orchestra\, and more recently on drummer Yoron Israel’s latest release\, Visions\, the Music of Stevie Wonder. \nLance’s earliest musical experience was established while growing up in the Baptist Church. His connection with spirituality and music has endured. In 2000 to 2006 Lance served as Director of Instrumental Music at Fountain Baptist Church in Summit\, NJ. Between 2006 and 2013\, while living in Massachusetts\, Lance served as Minister of Music for Andover Baptist Church in Andover MA\, leading worship services with gospel and sometimes jazz music. In 2002 he released Psalm\, the first of four Cds featuring original songs\, and jazz arrangements of hymns and Spirituals. \nAs an educator Lance’s recent teaching work has included woodwind instructor for Covenant Christian Academy in Peabody\, MA\, director of the Phillips Academy Gospel Choir in Andover MA\, and Berklee’s Saxophone Weekend for the Berklee College of Music summer program where Lance taught master classes\, group lessons\, jazz theory\, improvisation and ensemble. Lance also served on the faculty or Jazz At Lincoln Center’s educational department working with it’s outreach program for youth throughout New York City. \nIn 2014-15 Lance performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on the Broadway musical hit After Midnight. Starting in Spring of 2016 he performed in the orchestra of the Broadway production of George C. Wolfe’s “Shuffle Along …” featuring Tony Award winner Audra MacDonald and the choreography of Savion Glover. When he’s not touring with Abdullah Ibrahim and Ekaya\, Lance continues to teach and perform in the New York and northern New Jersey areas as a solo artist and in bands that include Andy Farber and his Orchestra\, and the New Lionel Hampton Big Band featuring Jason Marsalis. \nRealizing the importance of spirituality and the blues as healing and empowering forces\, Lance always makes sure to incorporate these elements from his cultural background into his music. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Wilma Ann – Singer\, Author and Poet \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWilma Ann is a singer\, poet\, author and worship artist whose ministry lives where sacred song meets the spoken word. A native of St. Thomas\, U.S. Virgin Islands\, she first stood up to sing in church at eleven years old — and that sanctuary calling has shaped every stage she has stepped onto since. She studied vocal music at New York City’s “Fame” High School of the Arts and at Cornell University\, where she directed the gospel choir and founded the all-female gospel ensemble Baraka Kwa Wimbo\, learning early that a voice raised in praise can gather a whole community together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom those roots she has sung at Carnegie Hall with the New York Choral Society\, headlined the Global Leadership Summit\, appeared on The Voice in Spain\, and toured internationally as a soloist and jazz vocalist. She previously spent 14 years in ministry at the Greater Allen AME Cathedral of New York. Beyond the church\, Rev. Marable is the Assistant Vice President of Community Engagement at NJPAC\, where she leads arts\, equity\, and community partnership initiatives across Newark and the region. She holds degrees from NYU (B.A.)\, The New School (M.S. & Post‑Grad Certificate)\, and Drew University (M.Div.). \n\n\n\n Phil Bingham is a New Jersey‑based pianist\, conductor\, educator\, and music consultant whose career reflects a lifelong dedication to musical excellence\, teaching\, and spiritual leadership. Born in the Bronx\, he began playing piano in church at just eight years old\, developing an early fluency in gospel\, classical\, and later jazz. He studied at the High School of Music & Art and earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Nyack College\, laying the foundation for a career that seamlessly blends performance\, instruction\, and mentorship. Over the decades\, he has become widely respected not only as a gifted pianist but also as a thoughtful conductor\, skilled arranger\, and inspiring teacher whose work spans artistic\, educational\, and sacred music communities. His long tenure as Minister of Music Emeritus at Concord Baptist Church of Christ in Brooklyn underscores his deep commitment to intentional worship and spiritually grounded musical leadership. \n\n\n\nA devoted student and close associate of jazz legend Barry Harris\, Bingham serves as Vice President and founding board member of the Barry Harris Institute of Jazz\, helping preserve and advance Harris’s influential harmonic methodology. He has taught at Jazz House Kids in Montclair and worked extensively as a teaching artist in New York City schools\, nurturing young musicians and fostering meaningful musical experiences for diverse communities. His advanced piano workshops—especially at the Barry Harris Summer Intensive—are celebrated for their rigor\, clarity\, and compassion\, with students praising his rare combination of exceptional musicianship and extraordinary humanity. Whether guiding pianists through bebop harmony\, conducting choirs\, or mentoring emerging artists\, Phil Bingham continues to shape the region’s musical landscape with wisdom\, integrity\, and a lifelong commitment to artistic excellence. \n\n\n\n\n\nGregory Burrus is a New Jersey–based live music ambassador\, cultural producer\, and community connector who produces and curates more than 300 music and arts events annually across the region. Known for his ability to unite audiences\, artists\, businesses\, and municipalities\, he has become one of the most active and trusted organizers in the state’s live‑music landscape. Gregory’s productions span jazz festivals\, house‑music celebrations\, street fairs\, cultural showcases\, and multi‑town collaborations that bring neighborhoods to life through rhythm\, heritage\, and shared experience. DESCRIPTION:SHOUT! – Clem's resident big band led by master saxist and composer Lance Bryant return for their monthly roof raising performance\n\n\nSHOUT! features some of the finest musicians in the NY/NJ area in a modern big band setting performing hip arrangements of new jazz classics and originals by master arranger and tenor saxophonist Lance Bryant.  This full sixteen piece big band performs compositions and arrangements by Lance and occasionally arrangements of his colleagues. Lance has been arranging for other artists and bands for over twenty five years\, starting with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. “Lionel Hampton always encouraged me to keep writing\,” Lance says of the iconic Jazz legend. “I found that when commissioned to write for artists or band leaders there was often some level of restrictions or parameters to adhere to.” That was until Lance was commissioned to write a program of arrangements to be performed live by vocalist Carla Cook and the NDR Big Band in Hamburg\, Germany in 2002. Given ample freedom to create by Carla\, Lance wrote nine arrangements for the program. “I was so pleased with the results\, I never forgot that feeling.” In the Spring of 2022 Lance finally decided to start his own band. “For me there’s nothing like that range of power and expression we can achieve with sixteen great musicians. When Lance is not performing his own music he is touring with revered South African pianist\, Abdullah Ibrahim\, performing and recording as saxophonist with fellow New York area players\, teaching and writing commissioned arrangements for other artists and bands. Lance comes out of Markham\, Illinois\, a small town near Chicago. He received his formal music education at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, MA\, where he studied saxophone\, composition and arranging. After moving to New York City in the mid. 1980s\, Lance continued his education\, studying saxophone and arranging privately with Frank Foster\, the former director of the Count Basie Orchestra. He also studied composition with Bruce Adolphe of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society. In 1990 Lance began his decade-long relationship with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and in 1993 became the Orchestra’s Musical Director and Principal Arranger. Lance also made his film debut in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X and traveled extensively with Phyllis Hyman\, Jon Hendricks\, Pete “LaRocca” Sims\, Wallace Roney\, Abdulah Ibrahim\, Bootsy Collins\, James Williams and others. In the early summer of 2000\, Lance was selected as an on-stage musician for the Broadway production of the musical review Swing!\, which received six Toni nominations. Throughout his music career\, Lance’s talents as an arranger\, composer\, saxophonist and vocalist have been featured on many projects like: For the Love of Jazz on Mojazz Records (Lionel Hampton)\, Dem Bones and Simply Natural on MaxJazz Records for Grammy nominated vocalist Carla Cook\, Swingin’ Away for the George Gee Swing Orchestra\, and more recently on drummer Yoron Israel’s latest release\, Visions\, the Music of Stevie Wonder. \nLance’s earliest musical experience was established while growing up in the Baptist Church. His connection with spirituality and music has endured. In 2000 to 2006 Lance served as Director of Instrumental Music at Fountain Baptist Church in Summit\, NJ. Between 2006 and 2013\, while living in Massachusetts\, Lance served as Minister of Music for Andover Baptist Church in Andover MA\, leading worship services with gospel and sometimes jazz music. In 2002 he released Psalm\, the first of four Cds featuring original songs\, and jazz arrangements of hymns and Spirituals. \nAs an educator Lance’s recent teaching work has included woodwind instructor for Covenant Christian Academy in Peabody\, MA\, director of the Phillips Academy Gospel Choir in Andover MA\, and Berklee’s Saxophone Weekend for the Berklee College of Music summer program where Lance taught master classes\, group lessons\, jazz theory\, improvisation and ensemble. Lance also served on the faculty or Jazz At Lincoln Center’s educational department working with it’s outreach program for youth throughout New York City. \nIn 2014-15 Lance performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on the Broadway musical hit After Midnight. Starting in Spring of 2016 he performed in the orchestra of the Broadway production of George C. Wolfe’s “Shuffle Along …” featuring Tony Award winner Audra MacDonald and the choreography of Savion Glover. When he’s not touring with Abdullah Ibrahim and Ekaya\, Lance continues to teach and perform in the New York and northern New Jersey areas as a solo artist and in bands that include Andy Farber and his Orchestra\, and the New Lionel Hampton Big Band featuring Jason Marsalis. \nRealizing the importance of spirituality and the blues as healing and empowering forces\, Lance always makes sure to incorporate these elements from his cultural background into his music.
