Soulful\, sexy and hypnotic\, the next wave of Brazil’s contribution to great music is poised to launch in the artistic hands of Abelita Mateus. \n\n\n\nLiving in the NYC area since 2012\, Abelita Mateus has taken a remarkable path.  She released her debut album Vivenda in 2017 with co-producer Romero Lubambo who also contributed as featured guitarist. Remarkably\, Vivenda reached the 24th position on the Jazz Week Charts. \n\n\n\nMateus is currently the pianist for the Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Cuban Experience\, directed by Dizzy Gillespie alumni John Lee. She has performed with such notables as Paquito D’Rivera\, John Lee\, The Dizzy Gillespie Big Band\, Antonio Hart\, Eric Alexander\, Larry Coryell\, Claudio Roditi\, Raul de Souza\, Hermeto Pascoal\, Dave Stryker\, Romero Lubambo\, and Portinho. Mateus plays at international venues such as the Blue Note New York\, The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.\, The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles\, Yoshi’s Jazz Club in San Francisco\, Ronnie Scott’s in London\, and Bird’s Basement in Melbourne\, Australia. In December 2017\, Mateus was invited to perform alongside Helen Sung\, Marcia Ball and Joanne Brackeen for NPR’s A Jazz Piano Christmas at the Kennedy Center. \n\n\n\n“Abelita Mateus has so many of the qualities that are important for any successful musician. Her piano artistry is remarkable\, and she is a talented composer and vocalist. Abelita’s intelligence and heart are also expressed through her music. DESCRIPTION:Cranford Summer Sounds Don Braden Karl Latham Big Funk \n\n\n\n\n\nSaxophonist\, flutist\, composer and educator\, Don Braden’s jazz career spans 40 years. He has toured the world with Betty Carter\, Wynton Marsalis\, Tony Williams\, Freddie Hubbard\, Roy Haynes\, and others and performed on Saturday Night Live\, at Carnegie Hall\, Harvard University (where was an engineering undergrad)\, and countless jazz festivals and clubs. He has over 100 CDs as a sideman and 21 as a leader\, the most recent his critically acclaimed Earth Wind and Wonder. Don has written 150 pieces for ensembles from duos to full orchestras\, including one for Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands\, and over 100 songs for jazz combos. His compositions appear on dozens of CDs\, TV shows and indie films. In 2000\, he received a Doris Duke Foundation New Works grant and adjudicates for them and for SURDNA\, the Downbeat Student Music Awards\, and others. He teaches at Prins Claus Conservatoire in the Netherlands and at Montclair State University. He ran NJPAC’s Jazz for Teens for 15 years and also led the Harvard University Monday Jazz Band. Don believes that jazz is a great music style to study because it reflects so many important aspects of life\, including creativity\, discipline\, teamwork\, leadership\, listening skills\, democracy\, supportiveness and improvisation. Don has been the music director of the Litchfield Jazz Camp since 1998.

DESCRIPTION:Cranford Summer Sounds featuring the Swing Town Big Band.     \n\n\n\nSwing Town is Maplewood’s own 20-piece big band. Under the direction of Ben Williams\, the group’s mission is to bring classic swing charts and modern jazz masterpieces to the residents of Maplewood and surrounding towns.  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe group rehearses twice a month at DeHart Community Center and performs several times a year\, including two free concerts (winter and summer) and occasionally in night spots\, restaurants\, and at benefits for local charitable organizations.

A native of North Carolina\, Lee ventured to New York City in 2011 where she quickly found her way into various musical communities. First\, she studied the music industry then clarinet performance at Appalachian State University. The music by Sweet Lee and her accompanying bands has been sending lighting vibes throughout the boroughs of New York. \n\n\n\nOpening  \n\n\n\nStephen Fuller Quintet \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nStephen Fuller is a dynamic bass/baritone who sings in the upscale supper club circuit in New York\, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He regularly performs at Shanghai Jazz and The Deer Head Inn\, in addition to other fine restaurants.  He is also\, the lead singer with the band Amani\, Mr. Fuller has developed and performed musical presentations including “The Life and Times of Nat King Cole”\, “The Music of Lionel Richie” and “The Sounds of the Caribbean”.  He is currently developing a show about the great Harry Belafonte (at the request of the Bickford Theatre). The current musicals have been performed at the Bickford Theatre\, The Brook Theatre\, Watchung Arts Center\, Roxbury Arts Center and other venues. He has also performed in Spain\, Israel\, Central America and parts of the Caribbean. He has released a CD entitled “Expressions of the Heart”.

MASKS OPTIONAL. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nWhether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker leading his own group (with 28 CD’s as a leader to date)\, co-leading The Stryker/Slagle Band\, or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine\, Jack McDuff\, and many others\, you know why the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.” Stryker grew up in Omaha\, Nebraska and moved to New York City in 1980. After establishing himself in the local music scene\, he joined organist Jack McDuff’s group for two years 1984-85. When McDuff wasn’t on the road (literally traveling by van all over the country) they worked a steady four-night a week gig at Dude’s Lounge in Harlem. His first break\, this turned out to be an invaluable experience\, paying his dues night after night with the soulful jazz organist. It was at Dude’s Lounge that Stryker met tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine\, who would occasionally sit in. After leaving McDuff\, Turrentine asked Stryker to join his quintet. From 1986-1995 he played with the legendary saxophonist at all the major festivals\, concert halls\, and clubs throughout the world. He is featured on two Turrentine CD’s (Stanley recorded Stryker’s tune “Sidesteppin”). With Turrentine\, Stryker was able to play with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard. The ten years playing alongside the tenor legend helped Stryker realize the importance of having his own sound. Dave continued to work with Stanley and was with him during his final week at the Blue Note in NYC\, when he passed in Sept. 2000. \n\n\n\nEarly on Stryker realized that as much as he loved playing standards and the jazz repertoire he had to have something of his own to give to the music. He feels that his writing combined with his playing is what shapes his musical expression. He has recorded and published over 150 of his own compositions and has released “The Dave Stryker Songbook” with most of his original music. Also 18 of the compositions (from the first five SteepleChase CD’s) are compiled in the book: “The Music of Dave Stryker” (SteepleChase Music) which can be ordered on this website. Some of the other artists who have recorded Dave’s music are: Stanley Turrentine\, Kevin Mahogany\, Victor Lewis\, and Steve Slagle. Dave continues to perform with The Dave Stryker Organ Trio\, his Blue to the Bone Band\, and The Stryker/Slagle Band. Recent gigs for The Stryker/Slagle Band have included a recent week at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center\, the Monterey Jazz Festival\, The Blue Note in Las Vegas\, The Jazz Bakery in LA\, and a 2003 tour of Japan. \n\n\n\nSideman work has included vocalist Kevin Mahogany’s group\, with Dave writing and arranging music for Kevin’s Telarc release “Pride and Joy” and “Another Time\, Another Place” on Warner Bros and tours of Europe\, Japan\, Brazil\, Poland and Carnegie Hall. He also has worked with Blue Note saxophonist Javon Jackson and pianist Eliane Elias. He has appeared on over 50 CD’s as a sideman. As a producer\, Stryker compiled the CD “The Guitar Artistry of Billy Rogers” which is the only existing record of the brilliant jazz playing of the late underground legend who was his friend\, former teacher and member of the Crusaders. He has also produced “A Tribute to Grant Green” on Evidence Music. Currently\, Dave is the Adjunct Professor of Jazz guitar at Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University\, and at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University. He is passing along his experience by teaching privately and at The Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop\, and The Litchfield Jazz Camp.
