SUMMARY:Yardbird Entertainment Jam featuring Duane Eubanks
DESCRIPTION:Yardbird Jam Sessions are a deviation from your normal jam sessions here at Clement’s Place! This month\, we’re featuring Duane Eubanks!Yardbird Jam Sessions are a deviation from your normal jam sessions! We encourage jazz musicians to learn new tunes\, engage with the audience\, and to respect the bandstand. If you’re looking for a challenge\, this is it! We have a sign-up sheet as well as some suggested tunes and guidelines. Read more below before attending! \n\n\n\nFeaturing: \n\n\n\nDuane Eubanks Quartet \n\n\n\nDuane Eubanks – trumpet \n\n\n\nMike Bond – piano \n\n\n\nRyan Berg – bass \n\n\n\nChris Beck – drums \n\n\n\nAbout Duane Eubanks: \n\n\n\nDuane Eubanks simmers. Percolates. The jazz trumpeter/ composer/arranger/producer is a multi-talented force whose fiery blasts and sweet distinctive sound carry his horn into a musical space that defies categorization. There’s a gritty soul and passion that emphatically captures his Philadelphia roots on his most recent pair of albums as a bandleader: “Things of that Particular Nature” (2015-Sunnyside) and “DE3-Live at Maxwell’s (2016-Sunnyside). \n\n\n\n“Duane is one of my all-time favorite brass men. One of the most honest musicians I’ve come across. He plays from the heart\, coming from such a rich musical family tree.” Roy Hargrove – Grammy Award winning trumpeter. \n\n\n\nDuane studied jazz in master classes at Temple University with the legendary Dr. Billy Taylor. He cut to the chase and headed to New York. He was tapped by the great pianist Mulgrew Miller to join his ensemble\, Wingspan. Acclaimed double-bassist/bandleader Dave Holland invited Duane to play with his big band on a pair of Grammy award winning albums. Eubanks became a hotly sought-after horn. He recorded and played with Elvin Jones\, John Hicks\, Curtis Fuller\, Louis Hayes\, Randy Brecker\, Avery Sharpe and Nicholas Payton. \n\n\n\nJazz is his turf. His bloodline. That bloodline began with his mother\, pianist Vera Eubanks. She was the illustrious Kenny Barron’s first piano teacher. His brothers are celebrated trombonist Robin Eubanks and guitarist Kevin Eubanks\, the former leader of the “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” band. Legendary pianist Ray Bryant is his uncle. \n\n\n\nYet\, his jazz bloodline isn’t a border\, but a gateway where he crossed over to play and record with Alicia Keys\, Talib Kweli\, Mos Def\, Wu-Tang Clan\, Freedom Williams\, and Kirk Franklin. He has played the Hollywood Bowl\, Carnegie Hall\, and the Kennedy Center as well as toured throughout Europe\, Japan\, and the Middle-East. \n\n\n\n“I Love Duane’s playing! He means those notes. You hear that BADD Philly Legacy! Proudly all up in there!” \n\n\n\nWallace Roney – Grammy Award winning trumpeter. \n\n\n\nThe Philadelphia sound. Home to Lee Morgan\, Clifford Brown. That’s where it all began for Duane. He began playing trumpet at 11 but didn’t consider music as a career until college. While studying for a business degree at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore\, Duane joined the university’s jazz band. He became a prominent brass component and jump started himself into opportunities to play with jazz VIPs Stanley Turrentine\, Shirley Scott\, Charles Fambrough and Clark Terry. \n\n\n\nHe performed admirably in master classes with Wynton Marsalis. Two years of private lessons with famed trumpeter Johnny Coles began Duane’s parallel interest in jazz as both a musician and educator. His first recording as a trumpeter came on brother Robin’s deft trombone session: “4: JJ/Slide\, Curtis & Al”. Duane’s pungent sound and impassioned playing led to his own acclaimed debut\, “My Shining Hour” (1999)\, followed up by “Second Take” two years later. \n\n\n\n“Duane Eubanks as a trumpeter and composer has gone deep into the history of the music of his people. He has kept his shine on his instrument through the years. Duane got Soul!!” Grammy-nominated pianist Marc Cary. \n\n\n\nHe is a recipient of the 2013 Philadelphia Education Fund EDDY Award. Jazz education is a large focus for Duane when he’s not performing or touring. Private lessons from him is a way to mentor and inspire young musicians. \n\n\n\nJam Tunes (try to learn these before coming to the jam!): \n\n\n\nSolarStablematesLittle Willie LeapsThere Is No Greater LoveJeannineMy Shining HourAlong Came BettyYou and the Night and the MusicMinorityIn Your Own Sweet WayI’ve Never Been in Love BeforeLover Man (vocal)How High the Moon (vocal)  \n\n\n\nSee less \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTwo successful freelancing jazz musicians and educators decided to combine their resources and over 10 years of expertise to create one of the leading jazz entertainment companies. Saxophonist Abel Mireles and trombonist Peter Lin formed Yardbird Entertainment to help bridge the gap between the new jazz audience and the young professional artists. Through performance\, education\, and opportunities\, we hope to cultivate a modern world that respects and honors jazz culture.

SUMMARY:Vince Ector Organatomy Trio+ SOPAC Jazz in the Loft
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an evening of “soulful mainstream Jazz” (Jazz Wise) with Vince Ector’s Organatomy Trio+\, including Pat Bianchi on keyboard and Bruce Williams on alto and soprano sax.  This is a Jazz in the Loft event you don’t want to miss! \n\n\n\n\n\nDrummer and educator Vince Ector’s fourth album as a leader introduces his Organatomy organ trio and revisits his Philadelphian past. The opening shuffle ‘Don’t Let Me Wait’ was a hit for Major Harris\, a founder member of the Philly Soul group The Delfonics\, in 1975. And the swinging up-tempo closer covers Don Patterson’s ‘Sister Ruth’\, a memento of the gigs Ektor’s father took him to as a youth. \n\n\n\nIn between\, a well-programmed balance of covers and originals namecheck musical influences and family ties. Benny Carter’s ‘The Courtship’ hints at samba and rekindles memories of Ector’s parents dancing at home and the moody ‘To Wisdom the Prince’ is dedicated to its composer\, pianist Larry Willis\, who died last year. \n\n\n\nEktor’s well-worked originals are equally in style. ‘Dex Blues’\, dedicated to his sister\, is a mid-60s Blue Note blues in an awkward key; the up-tempo title track\, dedicated to Ector’s mother Ms Pat\, switches from samba to swing and ‘Renewal Revisited’\, first recorded with saxophonist Bobby Watson in 2008\, features funky wah-wah guitar. \n\n\n\nEctor has extensive credits in soulful mainstream jazz and his band captures the earthy intelligence of its lounge-bar roots. Long-standing member Bruce Williams is a ringer for Lou Donaldson on alto sax\, soulful on soprano and spins lines with ease; while organist Pat Bianchi makes his Hammond B3 sing. And guesting on guitar\, the experienced Paul Hollenbeck adds grit\, muscle and panache. Solid album\, nicely done.

SUMMARY:Jazz973 Presents Miki Yamanaka Trio at Clements Place Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Japanese-born pianist Miki Yamanaka has called New York City home since 2012 and in the past decade has wasted no time establishing herself as one of the leading personalities of her generation on the piano and beyond. Critics laud her “light\, expressive touch and solidly crafted\, mainstream approach” – Mike Jurkovic (All About Jazz)\, while audiences delight in not only her playing\, but her vibrant personality as well. Yamanaka has gained international recognition from her albums as a leader; her most recent and most intimate release\, “Stairway to the Stars” (Outside In Music)\, features Jazz masters Mark Turner and Orlando le Fleming. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, Miki has emerged as a leader of the “New York Scene” via her notable residencies at mainstay West Village sister clubs Smalls and Mezzrow. During the pandemic\, she developed a successful in-home live-streaming weekly concert series cleverly titled “Miki’s Mood” where she features a veritable who’s who of NYC talent (including her husband and frequent collaborator – drummer Jimmy Macbride). The series showcases her vast knowledge of Jazz standards and tunes\, often featuring themed offerings of various composers from both the Great American Songbook as well as iconic Jazz composers. \n\n\n\nAs a sideman\, Yamanaka has worked with Jazz luminaries such as alto saxophonist Antonio Hart who posits “Miki will be recognized as one of the most exceptional artists of her generation\, as she is already one of the most talented and dedicated musicians from Japan.” Other notable bands she currently works in include the Philip Harper Quintet and the Roxy Coss Quintet. One of her most respected mentors on piano and organ (Yamanaka also performs on organ frequently)\, Larry Goldings\, once mused\, “If only I could have Miki Yamanaka comp behind me!” – a compliment of the highest order from one master pianist to another. She has a myriad of glowing reviews from her recorded work and the iconic Downbeat Jazz magazine has repeatedly awarded her albums high marks.
\n\n\n\nOn top of her exciting work as a bandleader in New York and abroad\, Miki can often be found out and about most nights\, where her infectious smile and gregarious nature engender fast friends in every audience she encounters. She has many hobbies\, including cooking\, knitting\, and perhaps most visibly\, her penchant for wearing her vast collection of kimonos on her gigs\, proudly representing her heritage and culture night after night as she dazzles audiences around the world. \n\n\n\nJoining Miki on piano for this event will be Barry Stephenson on Bass and Anwar Marshall on drums. \n\n\n\nBarry Stephenson – Bass\n\n\n\nBarry Stephenson is one of the most promising acoustic and electric bassists on the music scene today. \n\n\n\nBorn in Florida in 1987\, he began playing the electric bass at the age of 14\, with the intention to play rock music. In high school\, Barry inadvertently joined the jazz band and started taking acoustic bass lessons when he was 17 in order to prepare for college auditions. He attended Florida State University where he studied jazz and classical double bass with Rodney Jordan and Melanie Punter\, respectively. While at Florida State\, he also studied with legendary pianist Marcus Roberts. Upon graduating\, Barry moved to New Orleans and played with many of the city’s notable musicians while studying for his Master’s degree at the University of New Orleans under the tutelage of Roland Guerin. \n\n\n\nBarry has been known to lead and compose for bands in various genres of music. In 2011\, he was awarded the ASCAP Foundation Louis Armstrong Award followed by the Svenson Composition Award in 2012. Recently\, he released his debut jazz album Basic Truths featuring original compositions. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAnwar Marshall on Drums\n\n\n\nThe title of ‘drummer’ is too small to describe Anwar Marshall. \n\n\n\nAnd there’s nothing wrong with that. Drummer\, multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, music lover\, and producer\, Anwar’s ears and skill have been cultivated through exposure\, experience\, practice\, and the academy. His roots in Black music were planted in Philadelphia\, where he was born. Always eager to create\, Anwar began playing drums at an early age. With a culture as vibrant as Philadelphia’s\, there’s a multitude of musical directions to travel. As it were\, Anwar branches from the tree of great musicians and producers from Philadelphia’s iconic Soul\, Jazz\, and R&B sounds. His work as a sideman has earned him 2 Grammy nominations as well as the opportunity to travel across the world. Never not improving and exploring\, Anwar has set out to share his first body of work as a leader. ‘Cold’\, an EP\, will release on May 6th\, 2022 \n\n\n\nPlease join us. Registration Required

SUMMARY:Big In China Band w Alan Paul Cranford June 8
DESCRIPTION:Big in China performs a wide repertoire of originals\, classic rock and blues songs by the likes of the Allman Brothers Band\, the Grateful Dead\, the Rolling Stones\, Bob Dylan\, Freddie King\, Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan. We perform much of the music which the Woodie Alan performed to great acclaim throughout China\, \n\n\n\nThis week’s band is lead by Alan Paul. Alan is a former Guitar World and Wall Street Journal writer from the US who somehow became a notable Beijing-based blues musician. Alan wrote a memoir called Big in China about his crazy musical experiences here\, and tells the story of how it all began – thanks to a broken guitar\, a Chinese repairman who was also a secret musical wizard\, and their shared love of Stevie Ray Vaughn. \n\n\n\nAlan also has a huge connection to legendary Southern rock group the Allman Brothers Band. From writing about and interviewing them over a 25 year period\, Alan became an insider in their world\, and we talk a bit about his best-selling Allmans book One Way Out. The story of how it came to be\, in part\, because of Allmans drummer Butch Trucks’ discovery of and respect for Alan’s China book is pretty awesome.     \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCranford Summer Sounds \n\n\n\nWhether you arrive by car\, walking or the 3 minute away Cranford NJ Transit Station\, this is a walkable town with lots of businesses to see and enjoy and is a very convenient place to enjoy some live live music. \n\n\n\nWalk across the street\, grab a bite from a local restaurant\, settle in to your favorite lawn chair or arrive early and grab a yellow park seat for these special evening concerts in downtown Cranford. Every Thursday thanks to the Downtown Cranford Organization the streets of Cranford come alive with a different sound from the areas local artists curated and produced by Gregory Burrus Productions. Come have a blast with us. as all performances take place at the Eastman Clock Plaza. \n\n\n\nOn street parking is available and around Eastman Clock Plaza and a municipal parking garage is just around the corner. FREE PARKING EVERY DAY AFTER 6PM AND ALL DAY SUNDAY Learn more Click Parking in Downtown Cranford. SUMMARY:Yardbird Jam - The Lucky Thompson Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Lucky Thompson was the bridge between swing and bebop. Lucky\, Dexter Gordon and Don Byas were among the ones who showed up in New York at the time when the transition had to be made. Lucky had the brains\, which was why Bird and others included him on their sessions. He wasn’t the most technically proficient guy\, on the level of a Bird or a Sonny Rollins\, but he had the brains to overcome his technical limitations. And\, like all of the musicians who decide to put in the work of a craftsman and learn the music from the ground up\, he had his own sound. You don’t have to look at any one aspect of his playing; Lucky was just his own person. \n\n\n\nYardbird Jam Sessions are a deviation from your normal jam sessions! We encourage jazz musicians to learn new tunes\, engage with the audience\, and to respect the bandstand. If you’re looking for a challenge\, this is it! We have a sign-up sheet as well as some suggested tunes and guidelines.
