SUMMARY:Big In China Band w Alan Paul Cranford June 8
DESCRIPTION:Big in China performs a wide repertoire of originals\, classic rock and blues songs by the likes of the Allman Brothers Band\, the Grateful Dead\, the Rolling Stones\, Bob Dylan\, Freddie King\, Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan. We perform much of the music which the Woodie Alan performed to great acclaim throughout China\, \n\n\n\nThis week’s band is lead by Alan Paul. Alan is a former Guitar World and Wall Street Journal writer from the US who somehow became a notable Beijing-based blues musician. Alan wrote a memoir called Big in China about his crazy musical experiences here\, and tells the story of how it all began – thanks to a broken guitar\, a Chinese repairman who was also a secret musical wizard\, and their shared love of Stevie Ray Vaughn.  \n\n\n\nAlan also has a huge connection to legendary Southern rock group the Allman Brothers Band. From writing about and interviewing them over a 25 year period\, Alan became an insider in their world\, and we talk a bit about his best-selling Allmans book One Way Out. The story of how it came to be\, in part\, because of Allmans drummer Butch Trucks’ discovery of and respect for Alan’s China book is pretty awesome.     \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCranford Summer Sounds \n\n\n\nWhether you arrive by car\, walking or the 3 minute away Cranford NJ Transit Station\, this is a walkable town with lots of businesses to see and enjoy and is a very convenient place to enjoy some live live music. \n\n\n\nWalk across the street\, grab a bite from a local restaurant\, settle in to your favorite lawn chair or arrive early and grab a yellow park seat for these special evening concerts in downtown Cranford. DESCRIPTION:Sylvia Cuenca is an active drummer on the New York jazz scene who is contributing outstanding performances in a variety of situations. She has had the honor of sharing the bandstand with saxophone legend Joe Henderson for 4 years and trumpet legend Clark Terry for 17 years. The Joe Henderson quartet toured frequently in European countries Norway\, Denmark\, Sweden\, Austria\, Belgium\, England\, Switzerland\, France\, Italy and Germany and venues across the U.S. In a trio setting she performed with Joe Henderson and Charlie Haden in 1989 and with George Mraz in 1994. She performed with the Clark Terry Quintet and Big Band at Village Vanguard\, Birdland\, Blue Note\, Queen Elizabeth 2\, Royal Viking\, S.S. Norway jazz cruises and clubs\, concerts and festivals in the U.S\, Europe\, the Caribbean and South America. DESCRIPTION:Lucky Thompson was the bridge between swing and bebop. Lucky\, Dexter Gordon and Don Byas were among the ones who showed up in New York at the time when the transition had to be made. Lucky had the brains\, which was why Bird and others included him on their sessions. He wasn’t the most technically proficient guy\, on the level of a Bird or a Sonny Rollins\, but he had the brains to overcome his technical limitations. And\, like all of the musicians who decide to put in the work of a craftsman and learn the music from the ground up\, he had his own sound. You don’t have to look at any one aspect of his playing; Lucky was just his own person. \n\n\n\nYardbird Jam Sessions are a deviation from your normal jam sessions! We encourage jazz musicians to learn new tunes\, engage with the audience\, and to respect the bandstand. If you’re looking for a challenge\, this is it! We have a sign-up sheet as well as some suggested tunes and guidelines.

DESCRIPTION:Steve Nelson \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis outstanding vibraphonist and composer was born in Pittsburgh \, Pennsylvania \, in 1954. He started playing piano and vibes as a teenager\, and he progressed quickly enough as to play with guitar-legend Grant Green. \n\n\n\nHe graduated from Rutgers University with both Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in music and his teaching activities have included a position at Princeton University . Join Us. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLeonieke Scheuble is a gifted pianist and jazz organist who has a rare talent for blues and jazz improvisation at an unusually young age. Leonieke was named “Best Up and Coming Young Artist”-Hothouse NYC Fans Decision Awards 2015\, (her most prestigious honor to date). May 10\, 2016 had Leonieke honored and featured in film for an audience of over 1\,000 at the TEDx TALK Easton\, PA event. Later that year\, she performed and spoke for another TED x Event which was filmed for PBS and can be viewed at https://youtu.be/soqmMJIL_NY.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRecent years have seen Leonieke develop into a jazz lecturer and featured artist at several high profile Jazz Festivals. They include the Jazz Forum Festival (2021) and the Jazz Arts Project Summer Festival\, both featuring her quintet with legendary bassist\, Bill Crow.  Her “Generations of Jazz” Trio (also with bassist\, Bill Crow) is gaining much attention in the Jazz community\, and was selected as the cover of the Jersey Jazz Journal (June 2021) issue along with a featured article by Gerry Mulligan biographer\, Sanford Josephson.
