Through her 14 years of service at the Greater Allen Cathedral of New York under the leadership of Rev. Drs. Floyd H. and Elaine M. Flake as associate minister\, asst. dance director for Allen Liturgical Dance Ministry and co-chair for the bi-annual worship conference\, Rev. Let me share some details about his life and career: \n\n\n\n\nEarly Life and Education:\n\n\n\nJohn Gregory Lee was born on June 28\, 1952\, in Boston\, Massachusetts\, United States. His parents were Rev. John W. Her father\, Joseph\, made his living as a touring drummer for a Motown band called the Victorians\, while mother Oksana\, was a classically trained pianist and artist. From a very young age\, Briar was influenced and connected best with artists such as Frank Sinatra and Whitney Houston. Her parents say that the way she learned to speak was by memorizing and singing along to her favorite songs on her record player. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA young Briar took part in every performing event that she could\, singing in the choir and becoming the first female drummer in her middle school. In sixth grade\, she started learning to play the guitar from her uncle\, Anthony Signorella. Briar went to Arthur L. Johnson for her regular high school experience in Clark\, NJ. She also attended the Gifted and Talented program at a votech school where she participating in the highly praised musical theater department. She then went on to graduate from Seton Hall University with a degree in Special and Elementary Education\, minoring in Music for voice and guitar. Since graduating\, Nikki Briar has been teaching music to young children at the New Jersey Workshop of the Arts and currently attends Graduate School of Seton Hall University. She sings at events for the New Jersey National Guard and is a proud Army wife. \n\n\n\nWhen asked why she decided to pursue a career in country music\, Briar simply said: “I love the passion and the truth in country music. I love the story songs that can either make you laugh hysterically or bring you to tears. After all\, music is about emotion\, and I want my audience to feel something when they hear me sing.” \n\n\n\nNikki Briar currently resides in New Jersey with husband Angelo Martinez who is her inspiration and number one fan. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe series runs from June 6 to the end of August 29th except for July 4th. This session will be hosted by Gregory Burrus Productions with the Springfield Avenue Marketing ( SAM) Association. The jazz jam will be held outdoors at the Springfield Ave Gazebo in Maplewood\, New Jersey. Our Jazz Jam leader\, pianist James Austin Jr. curates these monthly sessions at the Rutgers IJS Clements Place Jazz location\, in the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hall. James a semifinalist in Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Piano Competition at the Smithsonian Institute and has been leading these session where we mesh legends with newcomers. Eyesha Marable\, AVP\, Community Engagement\, NJPAC. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artists\n\n\n\nJames Austin Jr / Leader NJPAC Jazz Jam\n\n\n\nJames Austin on Piano in Chicago\n\n\n\nJames Austin\, Jr. is an accomplished jazz pianist and bandleader who hails from Chicago\, IL.  He has honed his craft under the tutelage of a number of legendary jazz musicians including extensive study with Barry Harris\, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz educators of all time. \n\n\n\nJames’ musical achievements include being honored as a featured performer and semifinalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. In recent years\, James has performed alongside an illustrious list of singers and musicians in diverse settings throughout the world. He recently served as pianist and arranger for several star-studded concerts at Carnegie Hall under the baton of esteemed musical director\, Ray Chew. \n\n\n\nJames is regularly featured in the New York City area as a pianist and bandleader for various live concerts\, theatrical performances\, and civic and charitable events. He has curated and led the NJPAC Jazz Jam Session series since its inception. Songs in the Key of Wonder\, James’ debut album\, showcases his tasteful instrumental arrangements of a selection of classic compositions from the songbook of the great Stevie Wonder. \n\n\n\nAlvester Garnett – Drums\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Alvester Garnett is an American jazz drummer born on July 17\, 1970\, in Richmond\, Virginia. He has an impressive list of collaborations\, having played with artists such as Abbey Lincoln\, Betty Carter\, Regina Carter\, Clark Terry\, Pharoah Sanders\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, and many others. His contributions extend beyond the jazz scene; he has also appeared on Great Performances on PBS in a tribute to Kurt Weill. Garnett’s talent and versatility are leaving a significant mark in the world of music. \n\n\n\nMotoki Mihara – Bass\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMotoki Mihara is a jazz musician known for his work as a bassist.  From Kyoto\, Japan. Studied jazz performance at CCNY. Also\, studied/ performs African percussion\, Haitian Kompa\, and Caribbean music\, along w Jazz. \n\n\n\nJackie Jones – Vocalist\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJackie Jones – Her presence on the greater Newark/New Brunswick/New York Metro jazz scene is nothing short of prolific – it speaks volumes about what she has achieved since her emergence in the late 70’s and early 80’s — a musical journey that has carried her to destinations near and afar.   A product of the Jazz program at Rutgers University – she studied with a coalition of legendary talents led by bassist Dr. Larry Ridley\, pianist Kenny Barron\, alto saxophonist James Spaulding\, vibraphonist Steve Nelson and drummer Keith Copeland.   Among her career achievements\, Jackie has been blessed to establish musical associations with many noteworthy talents including: appearing as the opening act for Lou Rawls\, as well as performing with a host of jazz luminaries such as — saxophonist Houston Person\, vibraphonist Roy Ayers\, pianist Nat Adderley\, guitarist Jimmy Ponder\, Bassist Christian McBride and drummers Winard Harper and Cecil Brooks\, III. Her abundant talents have carried her overseas to perform at festivals in Russia\, Berlin and Switzerland while at home\, she makes regular appearances at local music festivals.
