Merritt’s contributions help shape the band’s dynamic and engaging performances. \n\n\n\nMr. Kropp earned his Bachelor’s degree in Classical Music performance with a minor in Theory and Jazz Studies from William Paterson’s outstanding Department of Music\, renowned for preparing students for careers in music while working directly with faculty who are also in-demand performers. His studies emphasized small group performances where he strives to combine classical technique with improvisational elements to create a distinctive artistic perspective through both technical mastery and creative sensitivity. Following musical studies\, his pursuit of a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Fordham University in 2004 reflects an intellectual curiosity that extends beyond music. Since completing graduate studies\, Mr. Kropp has kept up with semi-active performances. over the years in classical chamber orchestras at church venues in Manhattan. Mr. Kropp currently serves as an advisor to Computer Science programs at both Fordham University in NYC and the County College of Morris in New Jersey. \n\n\n\nAlan Hayes is the bassist for the jazz band Meant To Be. Born and raised in Northwest New Jersey\, he has a deep passion for both the electric and upright bass. His dedication to the instrument is evident in his performances\, where he brings a rich\, resonant sound that complements the band’s dynamic style. Hayes has honed his craft through years of study and experience\, making him an integral part of the band’s rhythm section1. \n\n\n\nPete Omelio is the drummer for the jazz band Meant To Be. Artists from all points on the musical spectrum have consistently sought him out because they know his musicianship\, versatility\, deep commitment to his craft\, and enthuaism will enrich any performance. Leaders such as Nat Adderley\, Stanley Turrentine\, Larry Coryell\, Randy Brecker\, Ronnie Cuber\, Jimmy Owens\, Dr. Billy Taylor\, Benny Carter\, Thomas Chapin and Sonny Fortune appreciated the fact that\, no matter what the gig\, from the world’s greatest concert stages to the smallest clubs\, Steve brings the same total commitment\, utmost professionalism\, and pure joy at making music. He is also a total musician\, who continues to expand his musical horizons by studying piano and trumpet. \n\n\n\nSteve Johns was born into a musical family in Boston in 1960\, and began playing drums at the age of nine. His mother\, Goldie Tyler Johns\, was a songwriter\, and three of her brothers were saxophonists\, including the legendary Jimmy Tyler\, who was Steve’s primary influence and inspiration. It was Jimmy who encouraged the youngster to study formally with Alan Dawson\, and his three years with the master percussionist and educator enabled him to make rapid progress. While attending Natick High School\, Steve played in both the concert and jazz bands and earned chairs in both the district and state jazz ensembles. After graduating in 1979\, Steve continued his studies at the New England Conservatory of Music where he received a thorough grounding in classical percussion from Vic Firth and Fred Buda\, while playing with such local jazz greats as James Williams\, Miroslav Vituous\, Jeff Berlin\, and Mike Stern. \n\n\n\nAt NEC he met his wife-to-be\, Debbie Keefe Johns\, a fine saxophonist in her own right. In 1982\, Steve made the move to New York\, quickly establishing himself as an inspirational player at home in any musical style. Over the ensuing three decades\, Steve has worked in every conceivable setting\, from big bands such as the Gil Evans and the Count Basie orchestras\, to accompanying singers like Jessye Norman\, Helen Merrill\, Diane Schuur\, and Dakota Staton. Steve played with the late great saxophonist Thomas Chapin and his Trio along with bassist Mario Pavone. He has toured worldwide as the regular drummer for Sonny Fortune\, Benny Carter\, Dr. Billy Taylor\, and many other luminaries. His five-year tenure as a member of Taylor’s trio brought him wide exposure\, including 75 performances for the pianist’s NPR program Jazz at the Kennedy Center with such guests as Wynton Marsalis\, Nancy Wilson\, Milt Jackson\, and Randy Brecker. \n\n\n\nSteve has appeared on over seventy albums by Leon Thomas\, George Russell\, Thomas Chapin\, Dr. Billy Taylor\, Houston Person\, John McNeil\, Sonny Fortune\, Peter Leitch\, Gary Smulyan\, and Bob DeVos\, among many others. In addition to his work as a sideman\, Steve is also a member of the collective group Native Soul\, and has been co-leader on recording projects by that group (One Mind\, 2012\, American Showplace\, Soul Step\, Talking Drum Records)\, as well as on an album with saxophonist Peter Brainin (No Saints\, No Sinners\, Playscape). \n\n\n\nIn addition to his extensive credits as a player\, Steve has long been active as an educator. While with the Billy Taylor Trio\, he took part in over a hundred lecture/demonstrations throughout the U.S.\, and has regularly served on the faculty for educational programs at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst\, Long Island University\, Montclair State University\, the Litchfield Jazz Camp\, the Vermont Jazz Center\, and Jazz House Kids. Steve and Debbie co-direct the JCC Thurnauer TeenTown Jazz Program in Tenafly\, NJ\, which has featured such guests as Larry Coryell\, Bernie Williams\, and Jimmy Owens. \n\n\n\nSteve and Debbie’s musical talents have been passed directly to a new generation. Their son\, bassist Daryl Johns\, while still a teenager\, has already made his mark as one of the most highly touted musicians to burst onto the scene in recent years. A graduate from Cal state Northridge with a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies\, David also has a Masters degree from the prestigious Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz from UCLA. Attention Deficit garnished wide acclaim and attention from press as diverse as Bandcamp Daily to Forbes. A co- recipient of a Jazz Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment of the Arts\, Ben has led and co-led numerous groups under his own name\, performing in many venues in the NYC area and across the country. He has worked with scores of major acts such as The Spinners\, The Temptations\, Frankie Avalon\, Lou Christie to name but a few. Ben has recorded for many independent labels\, and has done much work for TV\, including Nickelodeon\, MSNBC and the Golf Channel. His role as featured soloist with The Composers Big Band is highlighted on the group’s recent CD. Hot House says of Ben\, “Like Jimmy Knepper\, Williams is a distinctive and resourceful trombonist. He’s also not afraid to let the horn sound like itself\, slurs\, bleats\, blares and all.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGreg Grispart (alto saxophone/clarinet/flute)  is a multi-instrumentalist with accomplished skills as a performer in a wide range of genres. Less than two years later\, at the age of six\, Marel formed his first band\, working with professional musicians from the area\, performing a wide variety of musical genres. After his band’s debut in a jam-packed local venue\, Marel started building a name in the New Jersey scene. During this period\, he performed in numerous festival and venues such as the Convention Hall\, Stone Pony\, Wonder Bar in Asbury Park\, Camden Connect the Dots Music Fest\, Colts Neck Rock Fest\, South Mountain International Blues Festival\, and later on\, he began traveling outside the state with his band\, to places such as The Denver Day Of Rock and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland\, Ohio\, while at the same time being featured on National TV on the Harry Connick Jr. Show\, and multiple press articles in publications such as USA Today and Scholastic.​​ \n\n\n\n​ \n\n\n\nTwelve years after he picked up his first guitar\, Marel continues performing\, mainly on the East Coast jazz scene. With a unique combination of straight-ahead jazz and Caribbean jazz influences\, his guitar playing stems from guitar greats such as Ernest Ranglin\, Joe Pass\, Jimmy Ponder\, Johnny Smith\, Tal Farlow and Pat Martino. As put by the Exit Zero Jazz Festival “In his solo set\, Hidalgo travels from burning jazz jam staples like “Cherokee” and “How High the Moon” to more intimate fare like the oft-covered ballads “Lullaby of the Leaves\,” “Tenderly” and Thelonious Monk’s “‘Round Midnight.” With his quartet the music can range from uptempo swingers to lowdown blues and songs from the Jamaican Songbook inspired by Jamaican guitar great Ernest Ranglin”.​ \n\n\n\nMarel has performed at the Exit Zero Jazz Festival\, Jazz at Lincoln Center\, the City Winery in Pittsburgh\, the Count Basie Vogel Theater\, and has shared the stage with the greats Roger Humphries\, Dwayne Dolphin\, Tony Campbell\, Gary Mazzaroppi\, Radam Schwartz\, G.
