DESCRIPTION:Join us at Clement’s Place on Fri Oct 18 2024 at 19:30 for an unforgettable night of music with the Arcoiris Sandoval Sonic Asylum Trio featuring Marty Kenney- Bass\, Kenneth Salters – Drums and Arcoiris Sandoval on piano. \n\n\n\nPresented by Rutgers IJS and Greg Burrus\, this event promises to be a unique experience that you won’t want to miss. \n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite\n\n\nArcoiris Sandoval\n\n\n\nJazz pianist\, composer and Fulbright award recipient Arcoiris Sandoval is a jazz pianist\, composer and Fulbright award recipient currently residing in New York City originally from Tucson\, Arizona. \n\n\n\n“Her award-winning writing has a melodic sensibility that’s all her own\, often challenging and using rhythms that don’t interlock so much as overlap.”- Michael West\, the Washingtonian \n\n\n\nArcoiris Sandoval is a jazz pianist\, arranger\, composer\, and Fulbright award recipient currently residing in New York City originally from Tucson\, Arizona. She leads her own trio and quintet project called Sonic Asylum and is the Co-Director of an award winning multimedia orchestra called The D.O.M.E. Experience along with acclaimed bassist and composer Mimi Jones which aims to raise environmental and social awareness through the integration of orchestral composition\, choreography and immersive cinematography. She toured\, recorded and was the MD for vocalist Allan Harris for over five years. She performs with actress\, comedian and vocalist Lea DeLaria and also performs with The Mingus Big Band. She has written\, conducted and performed string arrangements with vocalist Tammy McCann at Lincoln Center which were also performed at the Music Institute of Chicago. In 2022\, she was the keyboardist for an orchestral tribute to The Notorious B.I.G. at David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center. \n\n\n\nShe obtained her Master’s degree in jazz piano performance from the Manhattan School of Music\, and is a two time ASCAP young jazz composer award winner in addition to being a semifinalist at in the Montreux Solo Jazz Piano competition\, a participant in the Mary Lou Williams Festival as well as the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program where she was mentored by jazz pianist heavy weights Marc Cary and Jason Moran. She also participated in the Metropole Orkest Arrangers Workshop directed by Vince Mendoza featuring guest artist Richard Bona and her arrangement was subsequently performed by Richard Bona with the Metropole Orkest at the 2016 BBC Proms tribute to Quincy Jones. She was also a finalist at the inaugural Ellis Marsalis Jazz Piano Competition in summer 2018. She has performed at major festivals throughout the world including Umbria Jazz Festival several times with Allan Harris\, NYC Jazz Piano Festival\, Vermont Jazz Center Solo Piano Festival\, Tucson Jazz Festival where she performed with legendary jazz drummer Jimmy Cobb in 2015 and in 2017 she opened for Tower of Power with Lonnie Plaxico\, as well as Telluride Jazz and many others. \n\n\n\nIn 2018\, she released her debut Sonic Asylum Trio album entitled “First Voyage” featuring Marty Kenney on bass and Allan Mednard on drums which won a Global Music Award. Her Sonic Asylum trio and quintet project has performed at NYC Winter Jazzfest in 2024\, the Kennedy Center\, Vermont Jazz Emerging Artist festival\, Milt Hinton Jazz Perspectives Concert Series and she won a Chamber Music America Performance Plus grant for this ensemble to work with Billy Childs as well as being a 2024 South Arts Grant recipient. Her original composition “Journey to Agartha” is now published in Terri Lyne Carrington’s compilation called “New Standards\, 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers”. \n\n\n\nAbout Sonic Asylum\n\n\n\n​Arcoiris Sandoval began her Sonic Asylum project in 2016 performing for the Milt Hinton jazz festival held at Baruch College in Manhattan. John’s dynamic original music is a unique blend of jazz\, Latin\, Brazilian\, rhythm and blues\, and world music. His original music can be heard on Telarc and Dream Box records. His song “Bittersweet” made the Contemporary Jazz Charts top-ten list. His music can also be heard on “Jazz Showcase\,” a major internationally released CD that is a compilation of Telarc’s greatest jazz recordings. \n\n\n\nCBS recorded John’s original solo piano music and he composed the score for the film”Lit’l Boy Grown.” \n\n\n\nAs pianist for international jazz recording artist Steve Nelson for over five years\, and Jeanie Bryson for over 10 years\, John has also worked with Cassandra Wilson\, Terence Blanchard\, Regina Belle\, Christy Baron\, Charlie Rouse\, Bobby Watson\, James Spaulding\, Jimmy Ponder\, Bill Hardman and Earl May. \n\n\n\nA self taught\, accomplished and versatile musician\, John was born and raised in New York City’s Greenwich Village across from the Village Vanguard. Influenced by his musical family\, Mixon began his artistic career as a tap dancer before switching to piano at the age of thirteen\, inspired by a visit to the Apollo Theatre. He studied under Sir Roland Hanna and quickly rose to prominence\, collaborating with notable artists such as Sam Brown\, Patti Labelle\, Joe Lee Wilson\, and Betty Carter. Throughout the late 70s\, Mixon recorded and performed with jazz legends like Charles Mingus and Dannie Richmond. \n\n\n\nMixon’s career is highlighted by performances with Lionel Hampton\, Joe Williams\, and Frank Foster\, participation in the first Newport Jazz Festival at Sea\, and receiving accolades like the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation Jazz Appreciation award. He also performed at the 2002 Winter Olympics and various international jazz festivals.In 2004\, Mixon was honored by the National Jazz Museum in Harlem\, leading to an invitation to the White House for Black Music Month. He has been recognized by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and had September 22\, 2011\, declared “Danny Mixon Day” in Brooklyn. Comfortable in genres ranging from duo to big band\, traditional to avant garde\, she has performed and recorded with Charli Persip and Superband\, Ralph Peterson and the Fo’tet\, Avery Brooks with Craig Harris\, Howard Johnson and Gravity\, Dakota Staton\, Kevin Mahogany\, the Firey String Sistas and the all woman big band DIVA\, among many others. She has worked with bandleaders Eddie Chamblee\, David “Fathead” Newman\, Frank Wess\, Hamiet Bluiett\, Don Byron\, Jay Rodriguez\, Frank Lacy and Nioka Workman; pianists Walter Davis\, Jr.\, James Williams\, John Hicks\, Kirk Lightsey\, Cyrus Chestnut\, Roy Merriwether\, Henry Butler\, James Weidman and Darrel Grant to name a few. She has played for numerous vocalists including Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Nnenna Freelon\, Michelle Lee\, Maurice Hines\, Jeannie Bryson\, Leon Thomas\, Jon Hendricks\, Michelle Hendricks\, Ann Hampton Callaway and Dianne Reeves. Television appearances include Newport Jazz Festival 1999\, Kennedy Center 25th Anniversary Gala\, BET Interview\, CBS Sunday Morning\, CNN with the Kevin Mahogany Quintet and CBS News with Lionel Hampton. Ms. Slocum holds a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the Manhattan School of Music. She studied jazz bass with Lisle Atkinson\, Stafford James\, Milt Hinton\, Rufus Reid and Ron Carter. She received an NEA grant for jazz study in 1986. \n\n\n\nG. Earl Grice Drums \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nG. Earl Grice – G. Earl has been playing music throughout the New York City area for the past three decades. His talents stretch from the piano to the drums. His favorite instrument is the drums. He currently plays with the Crown Heights Affair. He is affectionately known as ‘Sir Earl’ with his fellow musicians. Impressing everyone with his ability to text and drum at the same time. \n\n\n\nG. Earl has shared the stage with artists such as Sonny Rollins\, Clark Terry\, Rhoda Scott\, Stevie Wonder\, George Benson and many others. \n\n\n\nEarl was also the recipient of the 1997 Jazz Award from the Jamaica Development Corp. Earl has worked on approximately fifty movies and television shows as an actor. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAC Lincoln\, Tap\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNative New Yorker AC Lincoln was “Born in a Trunk” to Jazz singing duo parents Kim and Marion while on their tour of The U.S. Virgin Islands. Let me share some details about his life and career: \n\n\n\n\nEarly Life and Education:\n\n\n\nJohn Gregory Lee was born on June 28\, 1952\, in Boston\, Massachusetts\, United States. His parents were Rev. John W.
