SUMMARY:IJS presents The Dave Stryker Quartet
DESCRIPTION:PROOF OF VACCINATION REQUIRED. MASKS OPTIONAL. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nWhether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker leading his own group (with 28 CD’s as a leader to date)\, co-leading The Stryker/Slagle Band\, or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine\, Jack McDuff\, and many others\, you know why the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.” Stryker grew up in Omaha\, Nebraska and moved to New York City in 1980. After establishing himself in the local music scene\, he joined organist Jack McDuff’s group for two years 1984-85. When McDuff wasn’t on the road (literally traveling by van all over the country) they worked a steady four-night a week gig at Dude’s Lounge in Harlem. His first break\, this turned out to be an invaluable experience\, paying his dues night after night with the soulful jazz organist. It was at Dude’s Lounge that Stryker met tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine\, who would occasionally sit in. After leaving McDuff\, Turrentine asked Stryker to join his quintet. From 1986-1995 he played with the legendary saxophonist at all the major festivals\, concert halls\, and clubs throughout the world. He is featured on two Turrentine CD’s (Stanley recorded Stryker’s tune “Sidesteppin”). With Turrentine\, Stryker was able to play with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard. The ten years playing alongside the tenor legend helped Stryker realize the importance of having his own sound. Dave continued to work with Stanley and was with him during his final week at the Blue Note in NYC\, when he passed in Sept. 2000. \n\n\n\nEarly on Stryker realized that as much as he loved playing standards and the jazz repertoire he had to have something of his own to give to the music. He feels that his writing combined with his playing is what shapes his musical expression. He has recorded and published over 150 of his own compositions and has released “The Dave Stryker Songbook” with most of his original music. Also 18 of the compositions (from the first five SteepleChase CD’s) are compiled in the book: “The Music of Dave Stryker” (SteepleChase Music) which can be ordered on this website. Some of the other artists who have recorded Dave’s music are: Stanley Turrentine\, Kevin Mahogany\, Victor Lewis\, and Steve Slagle. Dave continues to perform with The Dave Stryker Organ Trio\, his Blue to the Bone Band\, and The Stryker/Slagle Band. Recent gigs for The Stryker/Slagle Band have included a recent week at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center\, the Monterey Jazz Festival\, The Blue Note in Las Vegas\, The Jazz Bakery in LA\, and a 2003 tour of Japan. \n\n\n\nSideman work has included vocalist Kevin Mahogany’s group\, with Dave writing and arranging music for Kevin’s Telarc release “Pride and Joy” and “Another Time\, Another Place” on Warner Bros and tours of Europe\, Japan\, Brazil\, Poland and Carnegie Hall. He also has worked with Blue Note saxophonist Javon Jackson and pianist Eliane Elias. He has appeared on over 50 CD’s as a sideman. As a producer\, Stryker compiled the CD “The Guitar Artistry of Billy Rogers” which is the only existing record of the brilliant jazz playing of the late underground legend who was his friend\, former teacher and member of the Crusaders. Multi-hyphenate composer\, arranger\, bandleader\, tenor and soprano saxophonist Lance Bryant each month brings his big band comprised of NY/NJ area jazz veterans and newcomers to Clement’s to kick off our fall Monthly Monday series. Featuring: Mark Gross\, Bruce Williams\, Craig Rivers\, Mike Lee\, Dave Schumacher\, Peter Lin\, Clarence Banks\, Jerrick Matthews\, Alfred Patterson\, Nathan Eklund\, Eddie Allen\, Ted Chubb\, Bill Mobley\, Oscar Perez\, Caylen Bryant\, and Jerome Jennings among others About Lance: Saxophonist\, arranger and vocalist Lance Bryant performs in the New York/New Jersey area. When Lance is not performing his own music he is touring with revered South African pianist\, Abdullah Ibrahim\, performing and recording as saxophonist with fellow New York area players\, teaching and writing commissioned arrangements for other artists and bands. Lance comes out of Markham\, Illinois\, a small town near Chicago. He received his formal music education at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, MA\, where he studied saxophone\, composition and arranging. After moving to New York City in the mid. 1980s\, Lance continued his education\, studying saxophone and arranging privately with Frank Foster\, the former director of the Count Basie Orchestra. He also studied composition with Bruce Adolphe of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society. In 1990 Lance began his decade-long relationship with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and in 1993 became the Orchestra’s Musical Director and Principal Arranger. Lance also made his film debut in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X and traveled extensively with Phyllis Hyman\, Jon Hendricks\, Pete “LaRocca” Sims\, Wallace Roney\, Abdulah Ibrahim\, Bootsy Collins\, James Williams and others. In the early summer of 2000\, Lance was selected as an on-stage musician for the Broadway production of the musical review Swing!\, which received six Toni nominations. Throughout his music career\, Lance’s talents as an arranger\, composer\, saxophonist and vocalist have been featured on many projects like: For the Love of Jazz on Mojazz Records (Lionel Hampton)\, Dem Bones and Simply Natural on MaxJazz Records for Grammy nominated vocalist Carla Cook\, Swingin’ Away for the George Gee Swing Orchestra\, and more recently on drummer Yoron Israel’s latest release\, Visions\, the Music of Stevie Wonder. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLance’s earliest musical experience was established while growing up in the Baptist Church. His connection with spirituality and music has endured. In 2000 to 2006 Lance served as Director of Instrumental Music at Fountain Baptist Church in Summit\, NJ. Between 2006 and 2013\, while living in Massachusetts\, Lance served as Minister of Music for Andover Baptist Church in Andover MA\, leading worship services with gospel and sometimes jazz music. In 2002 he released Psalm\, the first of four Cds featuring original songs\, and jazz arrangements of hymns and Spirituals. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAs an educator Lance’s recent teaching work has included woodwind instructor for Covenant Christian Academy in Peabody\, MA\, director of the Phillips Academy Gospel Choir in Andover MA\, and Berklee’s Saxophone Weekend for the Berklee College of Music summer program where Lance taught master classes\, group lessons\, jazz theory\, improvisation and ensemble. Lance also served on the faculty or Jazz At Lincoln Center’s educational department working with it’s outreach program for youth throughout New York City. \n\n\n\nIn 2014-15 Lance performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on the Broadway musical hit After Midnight. Starting in Spring of 2016 he performed in the orchestra of the Broadway production of George C. Wolfe’s “Shuffle Along …” featuring Tony Award winner Audra MacDonald and the choreography of Savion Glover. When he’s not touring with Abdullah Ibrahim and Ekaya\, Lance continues to teach and perform in the New York and northern New Jersey areas as a solo artist and in bands that include Andy Farber and his Orchestra\, and the New Lionel Hampton Big Band featuring Jason Marsalis. \n\n\n\nRealizing the importance of spirituality and the blues as healing and empowering forces\, Lance always makes sure to incorporate these elements from his cultural background into his music. He believes that the larger community of the world is in need of that same healing and empowering influence. \n\n\n\n\n\n0

SUMMARY:Clements Place Yardbird Entertainment Jazz Jam Session
DESCRIPTION:Two successful freelancing jazz musicians and educators decided to combine their resources and over 10 years of expertise to create one of the leading jazz entertainment companies. Saxophonist Abel Mireles and trombonist Peter Lin formed Yardbird Entertainment to help bridge the gap between the new jazz audience and the young professional artists. Through performance\, education\, and opportunities\, we hope to cultivate a modern world that respects and honors jazz culture.
