SUMMARY:Ruthers IJS & Dorthaan Kirk Present Sonelius Smith\, Adam Kahan And Friends
DESCRIPTION:Join Ruthers IJS & Dorthaan Kirk for a chill night with Sonelius Smith\, Adam Kahan\, and friends live!\n\n\nRuthers IJS & Dorthaan Kirk Present\nSonelius Smith\, Adam Kahan And Friends\nGet ready for an amazing in-person experience featuring the incredible talents of Sonelius Smith\, Adam Kahan\, and their friends. It’s a night full of great music\, good vibes\, and some unforgettable moments. Don’t miss out on this awesome gathering brought to you by Ruthers IJS and Dorthaan Kirk. See you there! \n\n\nSonelius Smith and Adam Kahan \n\nSonelius Smith and Adam Kahan started their musical partnership in 2015. Combining roads traveled and untraveled\, what they don’t know and what they haven’t already played; Smith and Kahan explore original compositions\, standards\, and some other stuff. On any given night they are sure to play something wildly beautiful\, compelling and familiar\, and then break through the guard rails and drive off a musical cliff. \nSonelius Smith is the greatest pianist you’ve probably never heard. A truly unique artist\, his ideas are more incendiary than the staunchest avant-gardist (though the avant-garde can’t claim him). He can also be straight-ahead or even in the pocket (but the straight-aheaders wouldn’t touch him). Living the music for more than eight decades and hailing from Hillhouse\, Mississippi\, he plays with a soul and spirit that are intangible. Infused with tradition and history\, he rejects the expected at every measure. He may be inclined to play a well traveled standard\, but then approach it in such a way that sounds alarm bells for the Jazz Police. He may play the most beautiful unimagined music you’ll ever hear\, and then produce puzzling even confounding passages\, while patiently giving space and silence their due. The list of greats Sonelius has played with is both long and impressive – Charles Mingus\, Rahsaan Roland Kirk\, Elvin Jones\, Rashied Ali\, Archie Shepp\, Freddie Hubbard\, Shamek Farrah – to name just a few. His compositions have been recorded by greats such as Ahmad Jamal\, David Murray\, Stanley Cowell\, Robin Kenyatta and others. When not making music\, Sonelius is a prolific painter. Amongst the three pianos in his house\, electric keyboards\, upright bass\, guitar\, drums\, scores of music… are endless canvases he’s painted over the years – portraits of Jazz greats such as Monk and Trane\, abstracts\, nudes\, still lifes\, musical notes\, you name it. \nAdam Kahan is a bass player and filmmaker who has been collaborating with Sonelius Smith for over 10 years\, and in many different forms. They first started working together\, with saxophonist/flutist Clare Daly\, writing and recording music for film. This led to the three working as a trio playing regularly in New York. Adam then formed and led the Lo-Fly sextet which featured Smith on piano\, Daly on baritone\, Ray Scro on baritone and soprano\, Nana Sakomoto on trombone and Dwayne Cook Broadnax on drums. Adam also worked with pianist David Durrah for multiple years\, up until his death in 2021. As a filmmaker\, Adam has made documentaries on Rahsaan Roland Kirk (how he first met Sonelius)\, Buster Williams\, Andres Serrano\, Fred Tomaselli\, narrative and experimental shorts as well.Smith and Kahan will be joined by Rodney Chapman (tenor)\, Gener R. Coleman (flute)\, Michael Irwin (trumpet) and George Schuller (drums).

He is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and earned his B.F.A. and M.M. from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor). \n\n\n\nGil has studied under jazz greats such as Geri Allen and Benny Green. He has performed in concerts and festivals around the world; notably at Carnegie Hall; Kennedy Center; Monterey Jazz Festival; Montreux Jazz Festival; and Detroit Jazz Festival. \n\n\n\nRecently Gil has toured extensively with the Glenn Miller Orchestra across the U.S.\, Canada & Japan. Each year during the summer Gil is in residency at the Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island\, MI–where he plays nightly with the Grand Hotel Orchestra and a host of other amazing artists. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNikita White — Vocals\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNikita White is a powerhouse vocalist whose warm tone\, soaring range\, and soul‑rooted delivery captivate audiences instantly. Steeped in gospel\, jazz\, and contemporary soul\, she brings emotional depth and radiant presence to every performance. White’s artistry bridges tradition and modern expression\, making her a standout voice in both worship\, blues and jazz‑driven settings. \n\n\n\nNikita White has shared the stage with celebrated gospel and jazz artists\, lending her powerful voice to collaborations with choir directors\, jazz bandleaders\, and soul‑driven ensembles throughout the tri‑state area. She has performed at notable venues including NJPAC\, The Apollo Theater’s community stages\, Rutgers IJS Clements\, and major church arts ministries known for spotlighting emerging vocal talent. Her blend of gospel roots and jazz phrasing has made her a featured vocalist in concerts\, festivals\, and special cultural programs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJarret Walsh — Drums\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Jarrett Walser is a dynamic and deeply musical drummer whose sound is rooted in the rich traditions of jazz while pushing boldly into contemporary expression. His playing blends technical precision with soulful spontaneity\, making him a first‑call drummer for vocalists\, instrumentalists\, and bandleaders across the region. \n\n\n\nWhether driving a hard‑grooving quartet\, shaping the contours of a ballad\, or opening the music with modern rhythmic ideas\, Walser brings clarity\, taste\, and an unmistakable rhythmic voice. His work continues to resonate in clubs\, festivals\, and creative spaces throughout New Jersey and New York\, where he is celebrated for both his versatility and his unwavering commitment to the music. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharlie Himel — Bass\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBassist Charlie Himel grew up in a musical family in Falls Church\, VA. His grandfather was a choir director at NMSU\, and his parents met in New Mexico competing against one another in a Battle of the Bands. (If you’re curious\, his dad’s band won\, but his mother maintains that the call-in voting was rigged against her.) \n\n\n\nSince moving to Brooklyn\, NY in 2014\, Charlie has had the humbling opportunity to work with jazz luminaries such as Alex Graham\, Carol Morgan\, Greg Ruggiero\, Vinny Valentino\, Michael Kanan\, Steve Ash\, Pete Malinverni\, Peter Mihelich\, Rudy Petschauer\, Keith Balla\, and Aaron Seeber. \n\n\n\nHe has held residencies and toured with bands such as the Glenn Miller Orchestra\, Grand Hotel Orchestra\, The James Hunter Six\, Nefesh Mountain Band\, and Wild Magnolia. \n\n\n\nCharlie now resides in Englewood\, NJ\, and maintains a full-time schedule as an in-demand bassist in the Tri-State area\, regionally and abroad. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Rutgers IJS Presents the Dynamic Steve Kroon Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Renowned composer\, arranger Steven Kroon known for his Afro-Cuban & Brazilian percussion has been creating captivating music for over 50 yrs\n\n\nI’ve been a professional musician for the last 30 years. I was born in Harlem and lived there until the age of ten. From Harlem we moved to St. Albans\, Queens. The year was 1957. My experience of being raised in Queens was very influential. At the time there were many great jazz and R&B artists living right in our neighborhood. At home I would mostly listen to my father’s music\, which was Tito Puente\, Tito Rodriguez\, and Machito. Then when I would visit my friends\, I would listen to all the great jazz artists. Right in my neighborhood was Lester Young\, Eddie Lockjaw \nDavis\, Count Basie and many more. Also\, a great influence on me was the great producer Henry Glover\, who lived right on the corner from me. He would also allow me to attend his rehearsals with the Cleftones\, Joey Dee and the Starlighters\, etc. With all that diversity and styles\, I would say most of my music appreciation was due to being exposed in the proper environment. Some of the highlights of my career all stem from live performance\, television shows and recording sessions. I was associated with Luther Vandross from 1981 – 2001. \nI have appeared on seven platinum albums\, and 15 world tours\, which include 2 live video performances: 1) “Live in Wimbley Stadium” in London and 2) “Live at Prince Albert Tulley Hall”\, also in London. An array of television shows such as: The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson\, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno\, The David Letterman Show\, The Arsenio Hall Show\, and The Rosie O’Donnell Show. Also a variety of music shows such as The Grammy’s\, The Soul Train Awards\, etc. \nAt this point in my life\, I have chosen to devote my time and creativity to pursue my own career. I have also performed with Ron Carter from 1987 to the present\, which has included extensive tours of the U.S.\, Japan and Brazil. Some of the places we’ve performed include The Village Vanguard\, The Iridium in NY\, The Blue Note in the U.S. and Japan\, and The Mistura Fina in Brazil. I’ve recorded 6 CD’s with Ron Carter and appeared on numerous TV shows in the U.S. and Japan. I have presently recorded my own CD\, which is titled “In My Path”\, which has been released on World Blue Records\, which I am no longer affiliated with. I have just completed my second CD entitled “Senor Kroon” for a Japanese label entitled M&I Co.\, for which I own the rights to in the U.S. \n \n \nDon’t let this unforgettable show pass you by! \n\n\n ****************************************************************************************************** \nCheck out the livestream on the Clement’s Place Jazz and IJS Facebook pages and on our YouTube channel – \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/407513298157352/?ref=newsfeed \nhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCf8W7q1qlz0yt5Ebcn4tkSQ \nhttps://www.facebook.com/InstituteJazzStudies
