SUMMARY:Richard Baratta Latin Jazz at Clements Place Feb 23
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendar now to ensure you don’t miss any of this extraordinary evening\, filled with incredible musicians and an exceptional jazz performance. \n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\nDrummer Richard Baratta Latin Jazz Band\n\n\n\nRichard Baratta was born into a musically oriented family in Poughkeepsie\, NY in 1950. He began his musical journey at the age 12\, playing saxophone\, flute and drums\, and eventually\, exclusively drums. He played mostly jazz all through his teens. \n\n\n\nAfter earning a BA in History from Wagner College in 1973\, and after studying with Jack DeJohnette\, Bob Moses and Steve Haas he moved to NYC in 1975 to pursue his musical career. From 1975 to 1984 Baratta played gigs and recorded in and out of NYC. Some of his bandmates and associations were with John Stubblefield\, Joe Ford\, Frank Strozier\, Hal Galper\, Mike Richmond\, Saheb Sarbib\, Dennis Irwin\, Vernon Reid\, Billy Bang\, Jack Wilkens\, Ryo Kawasaki\, Jessica Hagedorn and the Gangster Choir\, Guilherme Franco\, Pe De Boi\, Cyro Baptista\, and a very memorable one day hit with Hank Mobley and then Johnny Hartman. \n\n\n\nIn 1984\, Baratta decided to dramatically alter paths\, and pursued a career in movie production. “Money was tight\, the gigs were hard to come by\, and I was getting married and wanted to raise a family. It was just time for a very difficult decision that had to be made. I looked back many times and terribly missed the joy in playing and the camaraderie with the musicians. It was a total about face\, but I have no regrets\, except missing the live performance.” \n\n\n\nSince working on his his first film\, Desperately Seeking Susan in 1984\, Baratta has worked on over 50 movies\, first as a Location Manager\, then Unit Production Manager\, and for the past 15 years as a Co-Producer and Executive Producer. A small sampling of his filmography includes\, Academy Award nominated Joker Joaquin Phoenix winning the Best Actor Award\, Martin Scorsese’s Academy Award nominated The Irishman\, Dr.Strange\, The Wolf of Wall Street\, five Spiderman movies\,Too Big To Fail\, Smurfs\, Taking Pelham 123\, Across the Universe\, Donnie Brasco\, Working Girl\, and Big. \n\n\n\nFor a full listing of Baratta’s film credits\, visit IMDb:https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0053102/ \n\n\n\nFrom December 2016 to the present he has played with Eric Alexander\, Vincent Herring\, Walter Blanding\, Marcus Printup\, Bruce Harris\, Gerald Cannon\, Bill O’Connell\, Emmett Cohen\, Jeb Patton\, Steve Ash\, Chris Pattishal\, Mike LeDonne\, Ray Gallon\, Dave Kikoski Danny Nimmer\, Jerry Weldon\, Rogerio Bocatto\, Paul Bollenback\, Dave Stryker\, Mike Goetz\, Essiet Essiet\, Yoshi Waki\, and many others. \n\n\n\nJoining Richard Baratta Trio for this performance will be:\n\n\n\nBill O’Connell Keys and Michael Goetz on bass. After establishing himself in the local music scene\, he joined organist Jack McDuff’s group for two years 1984-85. When McDuff wasn’t on the road (literally traveling by van all over the country) they worked a steady four-night a week gig at Dude’s Lounge in Harlem. His first break\, this turned out to be an invaluable experience\, paying his dues night after night with the soulful jazz organist. \n\n\n\nIt was at Dude’s Lounge that Stryker met tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine\, who would occasionally sit in. After leaving McDuff\, Turrentine asked Stryker to join his quintet. From 1986-1995 he played with the legendary saxophonist at all the major festivals\, concert halls\, and clubs throughout the world. He is featured on two Turrentine CD’s (Stanley recorded Stryker’s tune “Sidesteppin”). \n\n\n\nWith Turrentine\, Stryker was able to play with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard. The ten years playing alongside the tenor legend helped Stryker realize the importance of having his own sound. Dave continued to work with Stanley and was with him during his final week at the Blue Note in NYC\, when he passed in Sept. 2000. Stryker has also performed with James Moody\, Jimmy Smith\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Jimmy Heath\, Kevin Mahogany\, Eliane Elias\, Joe Lovano\, Steve Slagle and many others. \n\n\n\nJoin Us \n\n\n\nSo grab your friends\, family\, or significant other\, and head over to South Valley BBQ and Lounge at 34 S. Originally from Cartago\, Columbia\, Manuela has exhibited her musical prowess at various venues and festivals across her home country. Her multi talented skills and her internal motivation to strive for the best will make Manuela’s star shine brighter than ever as a serious vocalist on the Greater New York and New Jersey live music scene. \n\n\n\nLaurie Vega\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI am a classically trained vocalist who hails from the sizzling streets of Spanish Harlem in New York City. Born in 1964\, I was raised in a culturally and musically rich Puerto Rican household. At any given moment\, the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald\, Tito Puente\, Louis Armstrong\, Celia Cruz or Frank Sinatra could be heard swooning from my family’s 2nd floor tenement apartment. Music was in my blood from day one. \n\n\n\nI graduated from the famed High School of Music & Art and majored in voice\, and then continued my formal music training at SUNY/New Paltz. \n\n\n\nAfter graduating from SUNY/New Paltz\, I lived in the east village in New York City and performed throughout the village with an original blues/rock/R&B band where I was the lead vocalist as well as the percussionist\, often filling in for the drummer who doubled as a sax player. The band performed at such venues as CBGB\, the Village Gate\, Speakeasy’s\, The Bitter End\, the Continental Divide\, and many other local joints that featured live music. As the years passed and members moved on\, I ventured out on my own and frequented a big band joint called the Red Blazer located on New York’s famous Restaurant Row. There\, I would sit in on open mic nights and sing the limited jazz standards tunes that were in my repertoire at the time. But when I realized that my big voice and sassy stage presence would garner great applause and requests for more… I knew this was the right path. JAZZ. My repertoire grew quickly\, and I would soon become a “name” in an unlikely town: Orlando\, Florida. \n\n\n\nI moved back to NYC in 2004 and continued my jazz/R&B performances throughout NYC and NJ. I am actually celebrating 18 years at my favorite venue\, “Don’t Tell Mama’s Cabaret” located on west 46th St in NYC\, where I have performed with such notable players as Etienne Lytle\, Chuck Mymit\, Barry Levitt\, Adan Perez\, Jotan Afanador\, Anthony G. Evans\, Tracy Stark. And across the river I perform at Shanghai Jazz in Madison NJ\, The Madison Community House\, The Boonton Coffee House\, Van Gogh’s Ear Café\, Clement’s in Newark\, Moore’s in Jersey City\, singing with giants James Austin\, Glenn Merritt\, Leonieke Scheuble\, Alex Saunders and Steve Ash. \n\n\n\nVirginia Hammer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirginia Hammer trained at Central School\, London and NYU. She produced and directed seven plays and a film (shown at the Newark Museum) as Artistic Director of Mid Atlantic Theatre Co. from 2010 to 2020 here in Newark.  British credits include “Aspects of Love” (West End) and regional theater in Scotland\, and York\, England..  In the USA\, she has appeared with the Alaska Rep.\, Tri-State Rep\, many O-O-B’way venues and the Philadelphia Fringe and done v/o’s for many Philly industries.  She was also the singer and keyboardist for a Philly-based Irish band\, Skibdereen\, from 2000 to 2010. \n\n\n\nHouse Band – Singer Showcase\n\n\n\nJames Austin Jr\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe soulful stylings of James Austin Jr.\, reveal his jazz pedigree and gospel roots. James\, originally from Chicago\, is an accomplished pianist and bandleader. He honed his craft under the tutelage of a number of legendary musicians\, including extensive study with renowned jazz educator\, Barry Harris. In recognition of his highly skilled musicianship\, James has received numerous accolades and awards\, including the honor of being selected as a semi-finalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano competition. \n\n\n\nJames has performed alongside an illustrious list of singers and musicians in diverse settings throughout the world\, including numerous celebrity functions and televised shows. He recently served as pianist and arranger for two star-studded concerts at Carnegie Hall under the baton of esteemed musical director\, Ray Chew. James is regularly featured in the New York City area as a pianist and bandleader for various live concerts\, theatrical performances\, and civic and charitable events. He has curated and led the NJPAC Jazz Jam series since its inception. \n\n\n\nFor the past couple of years\, he has also served as musical director for jazz phenom Miss Alexis Morrast. Songs in the Key of Wonder\, James’ debut album\, showcases his tasteful instrumental arrangements of a selection of classic compositions from the songbook of the great Stevie Wonder. James regards Stevie Wonder as one of the greatest composers of our time. Others have covered Stevie’s songs\, however\, James’ arrangements have a particularly appealing flavor and infectious groove. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJeremy Warren\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJeremy Warren\, born and raised in North Little Rock\, AR was heavily exposed to music growing up.  His mother is an organist/pianist where she played at his grandfather’s and now currently his father’s church in Little Rock & North Little Rock\, AR.  Upon graduating from high school in 2003\, he received a full jazz scholarship to The University of Memphis in Memphis\, TN.  He received dual Bachelor Degrees in Jazz Studies and Music Education with license in May 2012.  Memphis is where he credits his musical growth as a musician performing with many local/national artists as well as leading his own band whom performed every Saturday night on the famous Beale St. for two years.  Jeremy received his Master’s Degree in Music from New York University in May 2015.  While juggling a busy performance schedule\, Warren teaches music at KIPP-NJ at Rise Academy.  He holds the drum chair for world renown saxophonist Don Braden and the Don Braden Quartet.  Jeremy can be heard on Braden’s highly acclaimed album “Earth\, Wind\, & Wonder.” In 2016\, Jeremy released his debut album with his band JD Warren & The Rudiment which he co-leads with his wife Dermel Warren\, titled “I Can Do All Things.”  The album was named #85 on the Top 100 Jazz Albums for 2016 on the Roots Music Charts for radio play.  Warren has also performed and/or recorded with artists such as GZA-Wu-Tang\, Deanna Martin (Daughter of Dean Martin)\, Andy Milne\, Lenny Pickett\, John Scofield\, Tom Scott\, NYU Combo Nuvo\, and many more.  Jeremy plays Soul Tone Cymbals. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIan Kenselaar\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBassist Ian Kenselaar is a proud New Jerseyan. He began studying music at age 11 in 2004. Mentor James Buchanan introduced Ian to a jazz program at NJPAC in Newark\, directed by tenor saxophonist Don Braden. Jazz House Kids — a community arts organization lead by bassist Christian McBride and Melissa Walker — was another important institution in Ian’s early education. There\, Ian formed his first deep connections and began a lifelong journey into this music. \n\n\n\nIan went on to study at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University\, with bassist Kenny Davis\, drummer Victor Lewis\, and altoist Mark Gross. In 2014 Ian moved to Jersey City to be closer with master drummer and bandleader Winard Harper\, who would become another source of great inspiration. Harper hosts a twice weekly jam session and interview series at Moore’s Lounge in JC where young musicians could cut their teeth and learn real lessons on the bandstand from more seasoned players. Some of the guest artists Ian got to play with here include drummer Billy Hart\, and tenorman Stacy Dillard\, and pianist Norman Simmons. In 2017 Harper selected Ian to be one of twelve national recipients of the Ravinia Steans Music Institute Fellowship in Illinois where he spent time studying composition with bassist Rufus Reid\, pianist Billy Childs\, and tenor saxophonist Nathan Davis.Over the past two years\, Ian has also worked with the Princeton University jazz program\, under the direction of Rudresh Mahanthappa with ensembles lead by guest artist Danilo Perez and vocalist Jay Clayton. Currently\, Ian is working with tenor saxophonist JD Allen and is proud to be presented on his forthcoming album. Ian looks forward to a busy itinerary and will be working hard and taking no prisoners! \n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite\n\n\nClements Place Jazz Singer Showcase\n\n\n\n20190619 Jazz973 and Clements Place Logo\n\n\n\nDon’t miss this upcoming session featuring these talented singers and a stellar house band\, all hosted by Rutgers IJS and Gregory Burrus Productions. SUMMARY:Jazz Night featuring Norman Mann and Rafiki at Monsignor Linder Plaza aka the Priory
DESCRIPTION:As you can see and hear\, Norman Mann curates a stellar list of musicians that perform some incredible sets. Part of this may be hinted at in the band name Rafiki. Norman has been quoted as saying\, “Rafiki is a Swahili word that translates to English as ‘friend.’” So now\, let’s meet the friends in the band. \n\n\n\nNorman Mann — Bandleader — Percussionist\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNorman Mann\, an alumni and Football Hall of Famer of Weequahic High School is widely respected within the community and was honored to perform at the East Orange Library’s tribute to Amiri Baraka. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNorman\, along with Greg Salandis\, are widely known for their past partnership at Skippers Plane Street Pub in November 2007. Skippers was a very popular spot in Newark located on University Ave and was a welcomed addition to Newark’s nightlife. It was a place where music\, food\, drink\, and conversation were the rage and occurred in a comfortable\, friendly environment. Skippers featured many of the Tri-State’s musicians and singers. Norman Mann\, as a musician\, plays congas\, percussion and also sings. He has appeared with drummers Greg Buford\, Alvester Garnett\, and singers Ty Stephens\, Joy Topping Mann\, Tomoko Ohno\, and Dwight West along with one of Jersey’s top organists and keyboardists\, Mel Davis\, to name a few.  \n\n\n\nNorman and his bands have performed in numerous venues around Northern New Jersey such as Montclair’s Trumpets Jazz Club\, Newark’s Priory Jazz Club\, City of Orange’s Mr. Jays\, Jazz In Spiotta Park and Jazz On Sloan in South Orange\, NJ. Norman is the CEO of G Mann Productions\, has produced jazz shows at many of the Tri-State area clubs and lately has been producing events in Irvington’s Cricket Club.   \n\n\n\nJoy Topping Mann (aka Ife Basim)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoy Topping Mann (aka Ife Basim) – In her early days as a Contemporary Christian artist\, songwriter and arranger\, Joy Topping-Mann co-produced three CD projects of original music which she performed nationally and internationally with her band ‘Gifts.’ She has opened for other well-known Christian artists\, was signed with Jamm Records\, a Los Angeles\, California record company\, and has had her music played on radio stations throughout the U.S. \n\n\n\nAs a producer and promoter of special events\, Joy has received local acclaim for the Annual Women’s History Month Celebrations held each March at the St. Joseph’s Plaza (formerly known as the Priory) located in Newark\, New Jersey. These uniquely memorable experiences have focused on honoring extraordinary women for their outstanding accomplishments\, Audiences have been treated to virtuoso performances by the Tri-state’s most talented artists. \n\n\n\nAs a jazz vocalist\, Joy’s rich melodic voice and unique phrasing take the listener back to the days of classic jazz\, invoking shades of Sarah Vaughan and hints at the daring of Billie Holiday. Warmly embraced by enthusiastic audiences\, she has appeared at several venues throughout the Tri-state area. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.jerseyindie.com/blog/whm2021-womens-history-month-celebration-by-ife-basim-masterpieces \n\n\n\nChristopher Dean Sullivan — Bass\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristopher Dean Sullivan – “a bassist who is authoritative and bluesy while bending notes that honor his affection for legends such as Slam Stewart as well as Ray Brown.” ~ Steve Monroe\, Jazz Journalists Association \n\n\n\nThe critically acclaimed Chicago Ill born\, Pittsburgh PA raised bassist Christopher Dean Sullivan is well traveled throughout the U.S. and abroad. Christopher started his career in Pittsburgh \, PA. He formed local commercial groups that would go on to open up concerts for such bands of notoriety as the Ohio Players\, The Bar-Kays\, New Birth\, The Tavares\, and others. Chris decided to expand his musical horizons and started performing with the jazz notables of the Pittsburgh\, PA region; Joe Harris (Dizzy Gillespie)\, Roger Humphries (Horace Silver)\, Nathan Davis (Pitt University)\, arranger Arthur Powell\, Pete Henderson\, Larry Mcgee\, Nelson Harrison (Count Basie)\, J.
