DESCRIPTION:SHOUT! – Clem's resident big band led by master saxist and composer Lance Bryant return for their monthly roof raising performance\n\n\nSHOUT! features some of the finest musicians in the NY/NJ area in a modern big band setting performing hip arrangements of new jazz classics and originals by master arranger and tenor saxophonist Lance Bryant. This full sixteen piece big band performs compositions and arrangements by Lance and occasionally arrangements of his colleagues. Lance has been arranging for other artists and bands for over twenty five years\, starting with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. “Lionel Hampton always encouraged me to keep writing\,” Lance says of the iconic Jazz legend. “I found that when commissioned to write for artists or band leaders there was often some level of restrictions or parameters to adhere to.” That was until Lance was commissioned to write a program of arrangements to be performed live by vocalist Carla Cook and the NDR Big Band in Hamburg\, Germany in 2002. Given ample freedom to create by Carla\, Lance wrote nine arrangements for the program. “I was so pleased with the results\, I never forgot that feeling.” In the Spring of 2022 Lance finally decided to start his own band. “For me there’s nothing like that range of power and expression we can achieve with sixteen great musicians. When Lance is not performing his own music he is touring with revered South African pianist\, Abdullah Ibrahim\, performing and recording as saxophonist with fellow New York area players\, teaching and writing commissioned arrangements for other artists and bands. Lance comes out of Markham\, Illinois\, a small town near Chicago. He received his formal music education at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, MA\, where he studied saxophone\, composition and arranging. After moving to New York City in the mid. 1980s\, Lance continued his education\, studying saxophone and arranging privately with Frank Foster\, the former director of the Count Basie Orchestra. He also studied composition with Bruce Adolphe of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society. In 1990 Lance began his decade-long relationship with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and in 1993 became the Orchestra’s Musical Director and Principal Arranger. Lance also made his film debut in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X and traveled extensively with Phyllis Hyman\, Jon Hendricks\, Pete “LaRocca” Sims\, Wallace Roney\, Abdulah Ibrahim\, Bootsy Collins\, James Williams and others. In the early summer of 2000\, Lance was selected as an on-stage musician for the Broadway production of the musical review Swing!\, which received six Toni nominations. Throughout his music career\, Lance’s talents as an arranger\, composer\, saxophonist and vocalist have been featured on many projects like: For the Love of Jazz on Mojazz Records (Lionel Hampton)\, Dem Bones and Simply Natural on MaxJazz Records for Grammy nominated vocalist Carla Cook\, Swingin’ Away for the George Gee Swing Orchestra\, and more recently on drummer Yoron Israel’s latest release\, Visions\, the Music of Stevie Wonder. \nLance’s earliest musical experience was established while growing up in the Baptist Church. His connection with spirituality and music has endured. In 2000 to 2006 Lance served as Director of Instrumental Music at Fountain Baptist Church in Summit\, NJ. Between 2006 and 2013\, while living in Massachusetts\, Lance served as Minister of Music for Andover Baptist Church in Andover MA\, leading worship services with gospel and sometimes jazz music. In 2002 he released Psalm\, the first of four Cds featuring original songs\, and jazz arrangements of hymns and Spirituals. \nAs an educator Lance’s recent teaching work has included woodwind instructor for Covenant Christian Academy in Peabody\, MA\, director of the Phillips Academy Gospel Choir in Andover MA\, and Berklee’s Saxophone Weekend for the Berklee College of Music summer program where Lance taught master classes\, group lessons\, jazz theory\, improvisation and ensemble. Lance also served on the faculty or Jazz At Lincoln Center’s educational department working with it’s outreach program for youth throughout New York City. \nIn 2014-15 Lance performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on the Broadway musical hit After Midnight. Starting in Spring of 2016 he performed in the orchestra of the Broadway production of George C. Wolfe’s “Shuffle Along …” featuring Tony Award winner Audra MacDonald and the choreography of Savion Glover. When he’s not touring with Abdullah Ibrahim and Ekaya\, Lance continues to teach and perform in the New York and northern New Jersey areas as a solo artist and in bands that include Andy Farber and his Orchestra\, and the New Lionel Hampton Big Band featuring Jason Marsalis. \nRealizing the importance of spirituality and the blues as healing and empowering forces\, Lance always makes sure to incorporate these elements from his cultural background into his music. The son of renowned salsero Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez and godson of Fania Records bandleader Johnny Pacheco\, the younger Rodríguez cut his teeth backing up some of the greatest names in Latin music. He became his father’s musical director at the age of 19. \nCoached by pianist Oscar Hernandez\, the former director for “El Conde” and Ruben Blades\, Rodríguez was playing trumpet\, singing coro\, playing maracas and giving cues to the band. As a vocalist\, he sang on Tito Puente’s Grammy-award winning Mambo Birdland. As an instrumentalist\, he’s appeared with legends including Celia Cruz\, Eddie Palmieri\, Chico O’Farrill and Bebo Valdez. Now\, as a bandleader\, Rodríguez is drawing on these experiences to take his brand of Afro-Cuban jazz in exciting new directions. \n \nRodríguez’s music comes from a deeply personal place\, reflecting on his connections to his father and heritage\, as well as other unexpected influences. Rodríguez lived through the birth of Hip Hop during his early childhood in Bronx\, New York. As a sharp contrast\, after moving to Puerto Rico\, he focused on classical music\, performing trumpet with the Symphony of Puerto Rico at the young age of 15. While in the United States Army\, he discovered his love for jazz and made it the focus of his professional and educational pursuits after leaving the military. He studied under esteemed professors such as Tia Fuller and Gregory Groover. While in college\, he played multiple shows in Boston\, New York City\, and the greater New England region. \nPowe has returned home to Los Angeles and has gigged extensively. He has held residencies under his own name and has played at multiple venues across the city. DESCRIPTION:SHOUT! – Clem's resident big band led by master saxist and composer Lance Bryant return for their monthly roof raising performance\n\n\nSHOUT! features some of the finest musicians in the NY/NJ area in a modern big band setting performing hip arrangements of new jazz classics and originals by master arranger and tenor saxophonist Lance Bryant. This full sixteen piece big band performs compositions and arrangements by Lance and occasionally arrangements of his colleagues. Lance has been arranging for other artists and bands for over twenty five years\, starting with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. “Lionel Hampton always encouraged me to keep writing\,” Lance says of the iconic Jazz legend. “I found that when commissioned to write for artists or band leaders there was often some level of restrictions or parameters to adhere to.” That was until Lance was commissioned to write a program of arrangements to be performed live by vocalist Carla Cook and the NDR Big Band in Hamburg\, Germany in 2002. Given ample freedom to create by Carla\, Lance wrote nine arrangements for the program. “I was so pleased with the results\, I never forgot that feeling.” In the Spring of 2022 Lance finally decided to start his own band. “For me there’s nothing like that range of power and expression we can achieve with sixteen great musicians. When Lance is not performing his own music he is touring with revered South African pianist\, Abdullah Ibrahim\, performing and recording as saxophonist with fellow New York area players\, teaching and writing commissioned arrangements for other artists and bands. Lance comes out of Markham\, Illinois\, a small town near Chicago. He received his formal music education at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, MA\, where he studied saxophone\, composition and arranging. After moving to New York City in the mid. 1980s\, Lance continued his education\, studying saxophone and arranging privately with Frank Foster\, the former director of the Count Basie Orchestra. He also studied composition with Bruce Adolphe of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society. In 1990 Lance began his decade-long relationship with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and in 1993 became the Orchestra’s Musical Director and Principal Arranger. Lance also made his film debut in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X and traveled extensively with Phyllis Hyman\, Jon Hendricks\, Pete “LaRocca” Sims\, Wallace Roney\, Abdulah Ibrahim\, Bootsy Collins\, James Williams and others. In the early summer of 2000\, Lance was selected as an on-stage musician for the Broadway production of the musical review Swing!\, which received six Toni nominations. Throughout his music career\, Lance’s talents as an arranger\, composer\, saxophonist and vocalist have been featured on many projects like: For the Love of Jazz on Mojazz Records (Lionel Hampton)\, Dem Bones and Simply Natural on MaxJazz Records for Grammy nominated vocalist Carla Cook\, Swingin’ Away for the George Gee Swing Orchestra\, and more recently on drummer Yoron Israel’s latest release\, Visions\, the Music of Stevie Wonder. \nLance’s earliest musical experience was established while growing up in the Baptist Church. His connection with spirituality and music has endured. In 2000 to 2006 Lance served as Director of Instrumental Music at Fountain Baptist Church in Summit\, NJ. Between 2006 and 2013\, while living in Massachusetts\, Lance served as Minister of Music for Andover Baptist Church in Andover MA\, leading worship services with gospel and sometimes jazz music. In 2002 he released Psalm\, the first of four Cds featuring original songs\, and jazz arrangements of hymns and Spirituals. \nAs an educator Lance’s recent teaching work has included woodwind instructor for Covenant Christian Academy in Peabody\, MA\, director of the Phillips Academy Gospel Choir in Andover MA\, and Berklee’s Saxophone Weekend for the Berklee College of Music summer program where Lance taught master classes\, group lessons\, jazz theory\, improvisation and ensemble. Lance also served on the faculty or Jazz At Lincoln Center’s educational department working with it’s outreach program for youth throughout New York City. \nIn 2014-15 Lance performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on the Broadway musical hit After Midnight. Starting in Spring of 2016 he performed in the orchestra of the Broadway production of George C. Wolfe’s “Shuffle Along …” featuring Tony Award winner Audra MacDonald and the choreography of Savion Glover. When he’s not touring with Abdullah Ibrahim and Ekaya\, Lance continues to teach and perform in the New York and northern New Jersey areas as a solo artist and in bands that include Andy Farber and his Orchestra\, and the New Lionel Hampton Big Band featuring Jason Marsalis. \nRealizing the importance of spirituality and the blues as healing and empowering forces\, Lance always makes sure to incorporate these elements from his cultural background into his music. His résumé spans iconic venues such as The Village Vanguard\, Dizzy’s Club Coca‑Cola\, The Blue Note\, Carnegie Hall\, and international tours across Europe\, Canada\, Japan\, Puerto Rico\, Greece\, Russia\, the Philippines\, and the Caribbean. \nA dedicated educator\, Cochrane holds a Master of Arts in Music and Music Education from New York University and has taught at Rutgers University\, Princeton University\, the Bloomingdale School of Music\, and the JCC Thurnauer School of MusicJazzInfo. I was born in Harlem and lived there until the age of ten. From Harlem we moved to St. Albans\, Queens. The year was 1957. My experience of being raised in Queens was very influential. At the time there were many great jazz and R&B artists living right in our neighborhood. At home I would mostly listen to my father’s music\, which was Tito Puente\, Tito Rodriguez\, and Machito. Then when I would visit my friends\, I would listen to all the great jazz artists. Right in my neighborhood was Lester Young\, Eddie Lockjaw \nDavis\, Count Basie and many more. Also\, a great influence on me was the great producer Henry Glover\, who lived right on the corner from me. He would also allow me to attend his rehearsals with the Cleftones\, Joey Dee and the Starlighters\, etc. With all that diversity and styles\, I would say most of my music appreciation was due to being exposed in the proper environment. Some of the highlights of my career all stem from live performance\, television shows and recording sessions. I was associated with Luther Vandross from 1981 – 2001. \nI have appeared on seven platinum albums\, and 15 world tours\, which include 2 live video performances: 1) “Live in Wimbley Stadium” in London and 2) “Live at Prince Albert Tulley Hall”\, also in London. An array of television shows such as: The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson\, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno\, The David Letterman Show\, The Arsenio Hall Show\, and The Rosie O’Donnell Show. Also a variety of music shows such as The Grammy’s\, The Soul Train Awards\, etc. \nAt this point in my life\, I have chosen to devote my time and creativity to pursue my own career. I have also performed with Ron Carter from 1987 to the present\, which has included extensive tours of the U.S.\, Japan and Brazil. Some of the places we’ve performed include The Village Vanguard\, The Iridium in NY\, The Blue Note in the U.S. and Japan\, and The Mistura Fina in Brazil. I’ve recorded 6 CD’s with Ron Carter and appeared on numerous TV shows in the U.S. and Japan. I have presently recorded my own CD\, which is titled “In My Path”\, which has been released on World Blue Records\, which I am no longer affiliated with. See you there! \n\n\nSonelius Smith and Adam Kahan \n\nSonelius Smith and Adam Kahan started their musical partnership in 2015. Combining roads traveled and untraveled\, what they don’t know and what they haven’t already played; Smith and Kahan explore original compositions\, standards\, and some other stuff. On any given night they are sure to play something wildly beautiful\, compelling and familiar\, and then break through the guard rails and drive off a musical cliff. \nSonelius Smith is the greatest pianist you’ve probably never heard. A truly unique artist\, his ideas are more incendiary than the staunchest avant-gardist (though the avant-garde can’t claim him). He can also be straight-ahead or even in the pocket (but the straight-aheaders wouldn’t touch him). Living the music for more than eight decades and hailing from Hillhouse\, Mississippi\, he plays with a soul and spirit that are intangible. Infused with tradition and history\, he rejects the expected at every measure. He may be inclined to play a well traveled standard\, but then approach it in such a way that sounds alarm bells for the Jazz Police. He may play the most beautiful unimagined music you’ll ever hear\, and then produce puzzling even confounding passages\, while patiently giving space and silence their due. The list of greats Sonelius has played with is both long and impressive – Charles Mingus\, Rahsaan Roland Kirk\, Elvin Jones\, Rashied Ali\, Archie Shepp\, Freddie Hubbard\, Shamek Farrah – to name just a few. His compositions have been recorded by greats such as Ahmad Jamal\, David Murray\, Stanley Cowell\, Robin Kenyatta and others. When not making music\, Sonelius is a prolific painter. Amongst the three pianos in his house\, electric keyboards\, upright bass\, guitar\, drums\, scores of music… are endless canvases he’s painted over the years – portraits of Jazz greats such as Monk and Trane\, abstracts\, nudes\, still lifes\, musical notes\, you name it. \nAdam Kahan is a bass player and filmmaker who has been collaborating with Sonelius Smith for over 10 years\, and in many different forms. They first started working together\, with saxophonist/flutist Clare Daly\, writing and recording music for film. This led to the three working as a trio playing regularly in New York. Adam then formed and led the Lo-Fly sextet which featured Smith on piano\, Daly on baritone\, Ray Scro on baritone and soprano\, Nana Sakomoto on trombone and Dwayne Cook Broadnax on drums. Adam also worked with pianist David Durrah for multiple years\, up until his death in 2021. He again toured with Hamp in 1988 and 1989. A highlight in Dave’s career was traveling with the Art Blakey Big Band to Japan in 1987 to perform at the Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival. \nDave was an original member of Harry Connick\, Jr.’s Orchestra from its beginnings in 1990 until 2009. He has thrilled audiences touring with Harry in North America\, Europe\, Asia (Japan\, China\, Malaysia\, Singapore\, the Philippines and South Korea) and Australia. He also maintains an active studio of private students of saxophone\, clarinet\, flute and improvisation at the Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts in New Jersey. He has performed throughout Europe and the U.S. including Birdland in New York City and has recorded and produced two CD’s Leo Johnson- It’s About Time and Message To Mankind. Not content to merely be just another horn player on the Newark jazz scene\, Leo decided to hone his skills in a more diverse milieu and enlisted in the United States Air Force as a bandsman. The Air Force provided Leo with an opportunity to develop his musical talents both as a performer and composer and arranger. \n \nFollowing his stint in the Air Force\, Leo returned to the Newark jazz scene and continued to perform and record with other notable musicians \, most notably the organ legend Brother Jack McDuff . In addition\, he has been a member of and recorded music with such recognized artists as Chico Mendoza\, Jimmy McGriff\, “Fathead” Newman\, Jimmy Witherspoon and Johnny Hammond. He recorded Live In Paris at Club St. Germain with Rhoda Scott’s Trio. He led his own ensembles through the poignant compositions and arrangements he authored. \n \nWith an ear open to new talent\, Leo has helped to develop young artists who are prominent in today’s jazz scene including Victor Jones\, Terrance Blanchard\, Andy McCloud\, Alan Watson\, Michael Clark\, Ralph Peterson\, the Harper Brothers\, the late Woody Shaw and the late David Eubanks\, among others. He received three individual proclamations from Newark Mayors Kenneth Gibson and Sharpe James in recognition of his contribution to the arts in Newark\, and a fourth as one of Newark’s “Jazz Elders from Governor John Corzine. He was featured in the Star-Ledger by George Kanzler as one of 75 of the Garden State‘s great and most influential Jazz figures.
