Benito Gonzalez is a talented Venezuelan-born pianist and composer based in New York. He is known for his unique blend of American jazz traditions with rhythms from around the world. Here are some highlights from his impressive career:
- Early Life: Gonzalez grew up playing traditional Venezuelan folk music with his family. He later moved to the U.S. after an American cultural ambassador invited him to Washington, D.C.
- Career Milestones: He won the 2005 Great American Jazz Piano Competition and was honored as a Steinway & Sons artist in 2020. He has performed and recorded with jazz legends such as Kenny Garrett, Pharoah Sanders, Jackie McLean, and many others.
- Albums: Gonzalez has released several albums, including “Starting Point” (2004), “Circles” (2010), “Dream Rhapsody” (2015), and “Passion Reverence Transcendence” (2018). His latest album, “Sing to the World” (2021), features collaborations with renowned musicians like Christian McBride and Jeff “Tain” Watts.
- Awards: Besides winning the Great American Jazz Piano Competition, he has also received the Emerging Artist Grant from the D.C. Commission on the Arts & Humanities in 2003.
