James Austin Jr

James Austin Jr., an accomplished jazz pianist and bandleader, hails from Chicago, IL. iHs musical journey has been shaped by legendary jazz musicians, including extensive study with the renowned jazz educator Barry Harris

James Austin Jr. made a significant impact when he surprised himself as a semifinalist in the 2006 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Piano Competition at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. That pivotal day, he met prestigious icons such as Quincy JonesHerbie Hancock, and George Duke. However, it was Stevie Wonder who left the most indelible impression on Jamesโ€”before, during, and after that encounter.

In homage to Stevie Wonderโ€™s incomparable songbook, James Austin Jr. released his debut album titled โ€œSongs in the Key of Wonderโ€. This scintillating 10-song set brilliantly covers Motown legend Stevie Wonderโ€™s prolific mid-’60s to mid-’80s heyday in both straight-ahead and Latin veins. The album features captivating renditions of Wonderโ€™s beloved tunes..

James Austin Jr. has performed exclusive shows dedicated to Stevie Wonder at venues such as the University of Chicagoโ€™s Logan Arts CenterThe 75 Club in New York, and Clementโ€™s Place on the campus of Rutgers University in New Jersey. His musical roots run deep, coming from a family of musicians, composers, and singers in Chicago. His parents, James Sr. and Vernesta Austin, both contributed to the musical landscape, and his uncle, Luke Austin, was a preeminent contemporary gospel organist.

Since arriving in New York, James has kept busy with Gospel, R&B, and Jazz gigs. Notably, he has accompanied superstar vocalists like Lalah Hathaway, Brian McKnight, BeBe Winans, and Yolanda Adams during stellar musical director Ray Chewโ€™s annual all-star โ€œNight of Inspirationโ€ concerts at Carnegie Hall.

His soulful stylings reveal a jazz pedigree intertwined with gospel influences, making James Austin Jr. a remarkable force in the world of jazz piano

This April 28 session will be led by James Austin Trio featuring Ben Rubens (bass), Kayvon Gordon (drums), and Jackie Jones (vocals).
