Evan Sherman is an accomplished American drummer, bandleader, and arranger. Born in 1993, he began playing drums at the age of five and started performing professionally by the time he was 13. Over the years, he has toured and recorded with renowned artists like Ron Carter, Cyrus Chestnut, Roy Hargrove, and Wynton Marsalis.
In 2014, Sherman founded the Evan Sherman Big Band, a 16-piece ensemble featuring both rising stars and seasoned musicians. The band has performed at prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center and the Blue Note, and even recorded Duke Ellington’s “Queen’s Suite” in honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
According to Sherman, “I met (another 2025 back deck performer) legendary bassist John Lee (who played with Dizzy Gillespie for many years) when I was 15, and he has been a guiding mentor ever since. During high school, I played weekly with his band in South Orange and got to play and meet most of the living jazz masters. When I was 18, John brought me to Russia to play my first gig with the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band.”
Sherman is also a passionate educator, teaching privately and conducting clinics worldwide. His contributions to jazz have earned him recognition as a versatile and talented musician.
The Back Deck Returns!
