JD Warren and the Rudiment

JD Warren & The Rudiment is a NYC based jazz group lead by husband and wife duo Jeremy & Dermel Warren. This group was formed in 2015 and has released an album June 1, 2016 titled “Jeremy Warren-I Can Do All Things” that has received “Most Highly Recommended” from critics such as Jazz Times, Improvijazzation Nation, All About Jazz, AXS, and many others.  The Rudiment has performed in some of the top venues in the NYC area such as the Blue Note NYC, Minton’s Harlem, Club Bonafide, Cornelia St Cafรฉ, and many more. The Rudiment performed at the 2016 Jazz at The Buckman Center in Memphis, TN; 2017 Katy Jazz Festival in Katy, TX (where they also put on masterclasses for high school/college students and held workshops for high school jazz bands); Jazz in the Park in Patterson, NJ for 3 years running; plus many more. They performed at the Made in New York Gala along side jazz greats Randy Brecker, Fransico Mela, and John Patituci.  Drummer, Jeremy Warren, composes and arranges for the group while vocalist, Dermel Warren, handles the lyrical composition.  J&D bring their deep Soul & Gospel roots mixed with NYC’s Hip-Hop & Jazz influences to create their own unique style. They plan on releasing their sophomore album in early 2024!

Jeremy Warren on Drums

Jeremy Warren, born and raised in North Little Rock, AR was heavily exposed to music growing up. His mother is an organist/pianist where she played at his grandfather’s and now currently his father’s church in Little Rock & North Little Rock, AR. Upon graduating from high school in 2003, he received a full jazz scholarship to The University of Memphis in Memphis, TN. He received dual Bachelor Degrees in Jazz Studies and Music Education with license in May 2012. Memphis is where he credits his musical growth as a musician performing with many local/national artists as well as leading his own band whom performed every Saturday night on the famous Beale St. for two years. Jeremy received his Master’s Degree in Music from New York University in May 2015. While juggling a busy performance schedule, Warren teaches music at KIPP-NJ at Rise Academy. He holds the drum chair for world renown saxophonist Don Braden and the Don Braden Quartet. Jeremy can be heard on Bradenโ€™s highly acclaimed album โ€œEarth, Wind, & Wonder.โ€ In 2016, Jeremy released his debut album with his band JD Warren & The Rudiment which he co-leads with his wife Dermel Warren, titled โ€œI Can Do All Things.โ€ The album was named #85 on the Top 100 Jazz Albums for 2016 on the Roots Music Charts for radio play. Warren has also performed and/or recorded with artists such as GZA-Wu-Tang, Deanna Martin (Daughter of Dean Martin), Andy Milne, Lenny Pickett, John Scofield, Tom Scott, NYU Combo Nuvo, and many more. Jeremy plays Soul Tone Cymbals.

Dermel Warren on Vocals

Dermel Warren was born and raised in Memphis, TN, where she grew up singing in her motherโ€™s church.  At church, she received her vocal training from Kelley Muller-Smith, first lady of Miracle Temple Ministries, Inc.  She has performed background and lead vocals for Donald Lawrence, Richard Smallwood, Karen Clark-Sheard, Lisa Page Brooks, Beverly Crawford, Kurt Karr, Yolanda Adams, Ernest Pugh, Josh Milan (House Music Artist), jazz drummer Winard Harper, the amazing Valerie Simpson of Ashford and Simpson, and many more. Dermel has toured with Blues artists, the late Sergio Davis and Mel Waiters opening up for artists such as The Manhattans, Shirley Brown, Bobby โ€œBlueโ€ Bland, Bobby Womack, and Lenny Williams. She also opened up for Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton, & Mint Condition as a solo artist at the Budweiser Summer Fest Tour in 2011.  She is currently based out of New Jersey, collaborating with producers on their projects, and working on her debut album, โ€œMy Lifeโ€™s Journey.โ€ 

James Austin on Keys

James Austin Jr is an accomplished Jazz pianist and bandleader who hails from Chicago, IL. He has honed his craft under the tutelage of a number of legendary Jazz musicians including extensive study with Barry Harris, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest Jazz educators of all time. Austinโ€™s musical achievements include being honored as a featured performer and semifinalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition .In recent years, Austin has performed alongside an illustrious list of singers and musicians in diverse settings throughout the world. He recently served as pianist and arranger for two star-studded concerts at Carnegie Hall under the baton of esteemed musical director, Ray Chew.

Austin is regularly featured in the New York City area as a pianist and bandleader for various live concerts, theatrical performances, and civic and charitable events. He has curated and led the NJPAC Jazz Jam Session series since its inception. Songs in the Key of Wonder, Austinโ€™s debut album, showcases his tasteful instrumental arrangements of a selection of classic compositions from the songbook of the great Stevie Wonder.

Ben Rubens on Bass

Upright and electric bassist Ben Rubens, formerly the bassist with the Johnny Oโ€™Neal Trio, has rapidly developed a reputation for being a supportive and well-rounded rhythm section stalwart. His blessings include being the final bass player to play with drum heroes Al Harewood and Killer Ray Appleton; Additionally, Ben was personally invited into the home of saxophone icon Frank Wess three different times to play marathon length sessions. Performances include The Kennedy Center, The Apollo Theater, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Blue Note Milano and Roseland Ballroom. Ben has performed with Randy Weston, Winard Harper, civil rights era percussion pioneer Warren Smith and renowned bebop pianist Hod Oโ€™Brien on his 80th Birthday Celebration at the Kitano. Ben was also a featured artist on Johnny Oโ€™Nealโ€™s 60th Birthday Celebration Concert at Dizzyโ€™s Club Coca Cola, which received widespread acclaim due to its international live stream
