🏛️ Moore’s Lounge: A Cultural Beacon for Over 50 Years

Originally known as Bill & Ruth’s, Moore’s Lounge has stood as one of Jersey City’s oldest Black-owned businesses since 1968. Under the stewardship of Mrs. Ruth Moore, it evolved from a neighborhood bar into a sanctuary for jazz lovers, artists, and community dreamers. It’s the last of 11 taverns that once lined Monticello Avenue—a living monument to resilience, creativity, and soul.

With its legendary Friday Fish Fry Jam and Sunday “Meet the Artist” Series, Moore’s has become a jazz temple where generations gather to celebrate the art form born in America and nurtured in Jersey City.

🥁 Winard Harper: The Pulse of Jazz Legacy

Born in Baltimore in 1962, Winard Harper was a child prodigy who began drumming at age three and gigging by five. His career spans collaborations with Betty Carter, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, and Billy Taylor. As co-founder of The Harper Brothers, Winard helped define post-bop jazz in the late ’80s and early ’90s.

Today, he leads the electrifying Jeli Posse, blending African rhythms with American jazz traditions. At Moore’s Lounge, he’s not just a performer—he’s a mentor, curator, and cultural steward. His jam sessions are more than music—they’re masterclasses in legacy, community, and joy.
