“Plein air” means “in the open air” and is used to describe loose and fresh outdoor landscape painting. En plein air (“in open air“ in French ) is the act of painting outdoors and, in doing so, entirely immersing the artist in the environment of their subject.

Through the use of color, movement, and natural light, plein air artists attempt to capture the raw essence of a landscape. ​

in modern years, there has been a resurgence of interest in plein air painting, spawning local gatherings of artists known as “paint outs” giving local artists the opportunity to showcase their work and interact with fellow artists in the process.
