Rutgers IJS hosts the NJCU Jazz Ensemble featuring master saxophonist Abraham Burton for an electrifying jazz experience.

The Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies presents the New Jersey City University Jazz Ensemble, a distinguished collegiate large ensemble recognized for its rigorous musicianship and commitment to advancing the study and performance of jazz. Under the direction of Nathan Eklund—trumpeter, composer, and faculty member in NJCU’s renowned jazz program—the ensemble exemplifies the university’s pedagogical emphasis on ensemble precision, stylistic fluency, and creative inquiry.

This performance features the incomparable Abraham Burton, an internationally respected saxophonist whose work reflects both the historical lineage of the music and the evolving language of contemporary improvisation. Burton’s artistry, marked by intellectual depth, expressive intensity, and technical mastery, offers students and audiences a rare opportunity to engage with one of the leading voices in modern jazz.

Together, Eklund, Burton, and the NJCU Jazz Ensemble present a program that highlights the interplay between tradition and innovation, foregrounding the educational, cultural, and artistic values central to Rutgers University–Newark and the Institute of Jazz Studies. The evening underscores the Institute’s mission to foster scholarship, performance, and community engagement through the preservation and advancement of jazz.

Presented by the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies.
