Sunday Jazz Series returns for three Sundays with live jazz music curated by Gregory Burrus Productions. This Sunday we are happy to invite Grammy Winning Producer and Bassist John Lee and his friends to join us at the Gazebo for this special summer event.

About the Artists:

Bassist – John Lee

John Lee is a Grammy Award winning record producer and audio engineer. He has produced over 100 recordings and is the co-founder of the record label JLP, Jazz Legacy Productions. From 1984 thru 1993, John Lee was Dizzy Gillespie’s bassist. Performing and recording in the trumpet master’s various bands including the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet, Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and Dizzy’s Grammy Award winning United Nation Orchestra. After Dizzy’s passing, his family asked John to create an ongoing tribute to the great man and his music—and the concept for the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars was born. John is the bassist and director of the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars, Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band and the Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Cuban Experience. He has also worked in the bands of Gary Bartz, Larry Coryell, Jon Faddis, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Gambarini, Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath, Gregory Hines, Claudio Roditi, Sonny Rollins and McCoy Tyner.

Karl Latham – Drummer

Karl’s career has spanned the globe performing, recording, and producing with Grammy Award winning artists, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members and multitude of internationally acclaimed musicians.  Karl has performed with notable artists including: John Lee with Claudio Roditi, Slide Hampton, Clark Terry and Cyrus Chestunt;  The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars; Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Latin Experience with Paquito D’Rivera; The Fantasy Band including Dave Valentine, Dave Samuels,  Chuck Loeb, Noel Pointer, Roy Ayers; The Bernie Worrell Orchestra; Michael Urbaniak; Andy Snitzer; Edgar Winter; Johnny Winter; The Shirelles (Music Director); Howard Paul with guests Tom Scott and Anat Cohen; Ali Ryerson; Wolfgang Lackerschmid with Atilla Zoller, Ed Cherry, Cameron Brown; Karl has subbed on the Broadway productions of “Bring It On”, “Hamilton”, “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”, and “Ain’t Too Proud”.  Karl is included in the Drummerworld Top Drummers lis

Alex Collins (Pianist – Keyboardist / Composer – Arranger)

Alex Collins is a New York City pianist, composer and arranger. Since arriving on the New York scene, Alex has performed at the Blue Note Jazz Club, The Plaza Hotel, Dizzy's Club Coca Cola at Lincoln Center, Minton’s, The Kitano Hotel, Fat Cat and Smalls Jazz Club. Alex has had the honor of recording with great vocalist Michelle Coltrane on her record Awakening (2017), as well as drummer Gerry Gibbs on his #1 record, Weather or Not (2017) and Gibbs’ latest release, Our People (2019). Alex can also be heard performing with Ronniec Burrage and Holographic Principle, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars led by bassist John Lee, drummer Lenny White and bassist Lonnie Plaxico. As a sideman or leader, Alex has performed with noted musicians including: saxophonists Casey Benjamin, Ralph Bowen, Wayne Escoffery, Jon Gordon, Mark Gross, Vincent Herring and Dick Oatts; trumpeters Darren Barrett, Tom Harrell, Sean Jones, Joe Magnarelli, and Jim Rotondi; guitarist Vic Juris; bassists John Benitez, Kenny Davis, Essiet Essiet, David Finck, Gary Foote, John Lee, Rufus Reid, Ben Williams and Buster Williams; and drummers: Steve Berrios, Johnathan Blake, Chris Brown, Jaimeo Brown, Ronnie Burrage, Alvester Garnett, Winard Harper, Karl Latham, Lewis Nash, Clarence Penn, Ralph Peterson, Jr. and Tyshawn Sorey. Alex is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music (M.M. Jazz Composition) and the Eastman School of Music (B.M. Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media). He received the Wynton Kelly Jazz Foundation Award for Jazz Achievement (2003) and participated in the prestigious Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program (2006).
